replacing lights in dash?

I just changed most of the lights in my car to blue, but I dont like the orange dash now. What would I have to do to make that blue? I think its just an orange light bulb that is making it orange, do I have to order special faces or can I just drop in a blue light?

I don't know what Pontiac used, but in my '91 Camaro, the instrument panel uses clear bulbs. The colors (blue/yellow/orange) come from the color painted (silkscreened ?) on the panel. This is they way all instrument panels are lit, at least the one's I've seen... Besides, replacement bulbs would be a pain to get if it had to be a certain color.

Does your panel have only one color? If not, I doubt that Pontiac would use colored light bulbs to light each color on the instrument panel.

If you want a blue instrument panel, I'd imagine that you'd have to determine what color would be needed to mix with the color of your current panel to produce blue (i.e. yellow + red = orange).

Its not that hard to get to your bulbs, if that is what your asking. I would also love to do this, I will look around. Could you just lightly paint them?

E-mail me and let me know what happens.

On Firebirds, the illumination color can be easily changed by changing the bulb color.

Blue bulbs will work. Stay away from those which are made in CHINA. Taiwan or Japan is prefered.

Cheap bulbs bake off there coating quickly. Try and find bulbbs which are colored glass or epoxy coated.

Better than that, go to a truckstop somewhere and buy these little rubbers (hehe... bulb condoms) to put over the bulbs. They last indefinitely, unlike the blue colored bulbs, which will fade. Trust me on this, my dash is blue

I have the dash out of my 88 GTA currently and I know that the bulbs are clear 194's. Then to get the Pontiac orange they put the buld "condoms" on. Hehe that sounds a lot funnier when you say it out loud. I would suggest colored glass because they wont fade. In fact follow the link on MacEwens site and get his bulbs if you cant find colored glass ones. I wouldnt recomend the colored sleeves because my orange ones are pretty faded.

My '84 TA dash came with factory blue tinted bulbs. The glass itself is blue and it gives the dash a low intensity blue color at night. So you should be able to get replacement blue light bulbs if that is what you desire. I really don't care for it myself, but its different and isn't a bad look so I kept it that way. I think for night driving it is a little easier on your eyes.

I changed the 4 bulbs on my Z28 panel to red. Looks real nice but is dim. I think that you should get the hi-intensity lights that Ryan Maceven sells. Check out his site. Note that in the 91 Z28, the bulbs are soldered into the holders. I don't think you have this problem. Good Luck!!!

I just changed the bulbs in my Pioneer deck, and they had those orange-colored bulb-condoms over them.. I thought this was something new! Heh, glad to hear Pioneer wasn't trying something new

They were tight to slip over the new bulbs, but some soapy water did the trick.

I would recommend colored bulb covers or condoms, as you've mentioned, but I haven't found any myself that worked well enough.

The colored covers from USI (United Speedometer & Instrument) are vibrant, but dim the bulbs quite a bit.

The blue covers on Honda bulbs, glow light blue; similar to the Xenon Blue bulbs on my site. More of a bluish-white.

Perhaps, I have not seen these truck-stop bulb covers. I'll have to remember that on my next trip to Nashville.

Hey MacEwen~I checked out your site for the bulbs and noticed that the categories are for 86-89 Camaros, but I have an 85 Z28. Will those bulbs work for me as well? If not, do you have bulbs that will work? If not again, where can I find them? Thanks in advance...

I have a 91 RS and I put red bulbs in and they are great. At night it's really easy on the eyes. Red light doesn't hurt your rods in your eyes as much as yellow, white, and blue. Red neon on foot wells are looking even better.

witchdr,

Yes they replace all 194 or 168 factory bulbs. Actually 1985 should have the exact same number of bulbs as 1986-1989.

Hey guys I know this is a really old post but here is my problem. I have a 91 camaro. The bulbs are the the type that are soldered in. Is there any replacements that just drop right in or do you guys have a part number for the dealer? Really need to have light in my dash. LOL!!

Thanks guys,

Bill

Hello weberusn,

I replied to your other post on this subject. You can find the sockets with the replacable bulbs in the older third gen's in junkyards are you can buy the sockets in some auto parts stores. They usually come two to a pack. The bulb # is 194 and can be found almost anywhere that sell light bulbs for autos.

Hey trick. Will I have to replace the entire assembly? I have the sockets but the bulbs seem to be welded in. At the auto parts stores will they sell them with the bulbs already the sockets?

Thanks for you help man.

In yours, the bulbs are soldered to the terminals in the socket, that is why it has stamped on them "replace whole assembly" The ones sold in auto parts stores are empty sockets and you will have to buy the bulbs separately.

Re: replacing lights in dash?

I just sent back 8 led lights to Australia. They were meant for my 1989 Camaro. But not even close. My originals have metal clips that come up each side and flare out so to come into contact with the panel. The ones I'm seeing just have 2 hairlike wires on each side. Not even close to fitting. What do I do.
