Hatchback Separation

I'm taking apart a 1990RS for repainting. The rear hatchback glass is somehow bonded to the metal "trunk" lid deck. We've removed all the bolts and hardware, but the glass and metal bodypart to be painted don't separate. I presume that they have been bonded by some sort of sealer/adhesive to prevent water intrusion? How can these be separated? Or, should we just mask and paint?

Re: Hatchback Separation

Bumping up this old thread but I'm having a similar issue, I 'm changing from my D81 to a D80 Spoiler and have the decklid also, this way I wouldn't have to drill and weld the holes. Anyone have a good idea of seperation?

Thx

Re: Hatchback Separation

Might as well just mask & repaint.

Not that it CAN'T be separated. Its not even all that hard. Its a thick black "black goo" sealer, that holds them together.

But really no purpose to separate them, unless you are going for a 100% color change to the part.

EDIT: BTW....I think you set some kind of record, resurrecting a 9 year old thread!

Also-
Be sure to unscrew the metal lining that goes around the glass, there are 2 phillips screws, one on each side of the decklid.
