BorgWarner 9 bolt

Where can you find gears for a 9 bolt rear end? I am looking for something like 3.27 or higher (numerically). I've got the 2.77 rear now. Is there a lsd available anywhere for this rear end?

No one makes gears for that carrier. Just plan on a new axle. I am going to a 4th gen axle soon.

You've got to be kidding, somebody somewhere has to make a darn gearset for that rearend. I don't want to change the entire rearend just for a gear ration change, I'm not going to try to break into the 11's with this car, at least not yet.

Don't they already come with a LSD and 3.27? Well that's what I thought anywayz. All the BW I've seen had LSD's. But anyways. yes they still do make gears for that rear. I think you can get up to 3.57 or something like that. Someone told me SLP has. ANyways did you try calling comps. like Summit or jegs. Or just calling the gear companies them self. Cause I think there are still a good amount of comps that make. Anyways what you could do is get it out a another BW. Cause my BW has 3.27 w/posi.

And wait didn't the BW rears come on IROC's and Z's only? Why doesn't your rear have a posi? did someone take it? Oh well.

Well those rear ends came with both 2.77 and 3.27. So seeing that no one makes aftermarket parts for them, your best bet is to find some 3.27 gears out of an IROC from 87-89.

The BW rear was used since 85, on both cars. There are gears available, do a search on the tech board and you will find links to a couple places. I think DTS is one place that sells them. The 3.27 gear should be available, and I know the 3.70 is. There is also a 3.45, but as far as I know, you wont find it. You will need a new carrier to run any of those, because you have a 2-series carrier, and there is no other gear available for you to use.

Ok listen up.
1st you can get 3.27's,3.47's or 3.70's for those rear ends.
2nd You will hav eto get a new carrier(ie posi) for your rear because no of the for mention gear sets will fit your carrier.
3rd The gears are high dollar.
4th The damn carrier is hard to find.(I found one in two years of searching)
5th Just go out and buy you a fouth gen rear end for $350 and save yourself parts and labor on getting a new carrier and gears put in your old rear end.

DTS sells the gears for I think $312. www.drivetrainspecialists.com

Reider Racing has them also for $299. www.reiderracing.com/

Ask them about carriers too. Worse case scenario, you'd have to find one in a bone-yard.

Now wait a minute... Irocs, Z, and L98 birds with BW... 3.27 LSD...

My '85 Trans AM LG4 used to have BW 3.27 open rear, drum brake rear.... Until last week... I got a GM 10 bolt 3.73 from the junk yard. $175 with exchange....

It would cost a lot more than that to get different gears...

'85 Trans AM LG4 5-speed: '68 327 from vette, stroked to 350, L31 vortec heads, .015" gaskets, comp cams XE 268, Edelbrock 600, RPM intake, headman hedders and 3" home made exaust system, ASCD ram air(formerly dirk's), rustoleum-black interior, 8 point roll bar is rusting away in the garage(waiting for lazy neighbor to weld it)

Correction: lazy neighbor sold me his welder.

tuned carburator and a lot less weight since last trip to the track...

no more 275x60x15
it's 245x50x16

put a 3.73's a few days ago

me be faster next time I go...

Ok, now you wait a minute... There were 3 gears available for 9-bolts from the factory. 2.77, 3.27, and 3.45. 2.77 and 3.27 were on 350's, and 3.45 were on 305 TPI sticks. They were all posi, and all were disc brakes. This information is to the best of my knowledge, I could be wrong.
Your LG4 should have had a 10-bolt 2.73, not a 9-bolt.

Kevin91Z has the most correct specs!! Also, in 1989 when they offered dual-cats, you could get a 5.7L car with single-cat, 10-bolt w/2.73 gears and drum brakes. For the record, my Formula is a little rare. It was an early-year car w/5.7, 3.27, discs, dual-cats, and t-tops (plastic).

Well you guys mention all of these different size gears, but not one of you said anything about the 3.08 I have a 9-bolt and it has the factory tags, even the one that tells about the limited slip fluid. I believe this came out of a 1987 Pontiac GTA, I could be off by 1 on the year. No one has this ratio? There were 2 to choose from, and I picked this one over the 3.27, because thats what my car has now and I won't have to recalibrate my spedo.

By the way is this a 2 or 3 series carrier??

My 89 Formula alos had the 10 bolt w/3.27's w/dual cats and glass t-tops. I just bought an 86 T/A for my 89 drivetrain and it has the 9 bolt in it. Not sure about the gears in it, rpo sheet is missing and I bought it w/a bad engine. If I had a choice I'd rather keep my 10 bolt(can't use it broke ring teeth)

you can put 3 series gears in the BW 2 series carrier, I did it, and also helped another guy do it. All you need is 1/4in spacer, and they will work. Also I think DTS or another aftermarket company sells 3series gears for the 2 series carrier. The good thing about this rear (the BW) is that is was probably the strongest rear put into 3rd gens. If you have any questions, e-mail me at britain.hirte@beale.af.mil

my records have shown the 89 single cat cars with L98 all to be 2.77 gear and all bw with 4 wheel disc. only year as far as i've found the L98 didn't have disc in the rear was some very few 91's due to a problem with the brakes. as for the carrier, it was available from gm last time i checked at a cheap price of 620 bucks list. better off living with what you have or getting a 10 bolt from a 90 or newer and putting in what you want. might even find a v6 rear with 3.42's cheap and just put in a carrier.

I have searched high and low for two years for gears for thios axel. I found a couple of places that had gears for the 3 series carrier never for the 2 series, and Yes that includes Jegs Summit DTS and other small companies. I had found a spacer that someone made, forget who, and a 3.77 gear set to go on it. I totaled everything up( without labor) and figured it would cost aroun $800 to get it all done in the end. Plus what ever it would cost to set up the rear.(I dont have the tools to do it RIGHT at my house). I guess it could be done but it is so much cheaper to do what I am going to do with a 4th gen axel. I mean hey I get better rear disc so beter breaking. Also it makes me get ne wheels for the back and I picke up a set of 94 T/A 16"x8" wheels w/out tires for $200 Now all i need is spacers for the front and the 4th gen axel. I am putting this projects cost around $800-$900 with labor, axle, new pads and rotors, 3.73 gears, wheels, Tires, and spacers. Depending on which tires I get thisa could cost as much as $1650. Oh well I mean thin about it the $$$ I would spen to get 3.73's in my 9-bolt I can get 16" wheels in a style I don't see many 3rd gens with, better bakeing, new rear brakes, new tires and the gears. I think this is the best way to go at it.

awhile ago, there was a thread on making your BW posi again. somebody had all the necessary information to "recondition" your beat up rear end with 130000 miles on it. does anybody still have that? supposively there was going to be a tech article on it but i haven't seen it yet.
