You may want to try the suspension board. You'll get more responses, as well as better ones.

There are a couple things that can cause a loose steering wheel.

The steering box. The gears wear out just like anything else.

The pitman arm. It's what transferes the movement from the box to the tie rods.

The tie rod end links. The stock ones are nothing more than sheet metal wrapped around the tie rods and ends, with nothing more than clamps holding them.

The ball joints. They're what hold the tie rod ends to the steering knuckle.

The control arm bushings. They're what attaches the lower "A" frame to the subframe. They're soft rubber and will harden enough to cause them to stay contracted instead of expanding enough to fill the hole they're in.

Last, but not least, is the wheel bearings. I'd hate to think they're loose enough to cause a noticable difference, but it's happened.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

As I said, try the suspension board.

Good list.... I might add, the center link, which is the piece that goes between the tie rods and hooks to the steering gear; the rag joint, that connects the steering wheel to the steering gear; and the "frame" cracked around the steering box bolts.

We both missed the most simple one...

Not enough air in the tires. That can give a real loose feeling.

Also, the lug nuts could be loose. Hopefully you'd notice OTHER things like the shimmy shimmy cocoa puff coming through the wheel.
