Help me diagnose my gf's '93 F**d Probe

Personally, I hate f**king probes, but she says she got a good deal on it, so what can I do. Anyway, she's only had it about a week, and she claims that when it shifts into second it clunks really bad, and then when it goes into 3rd the engine revs to about 4k before it engages. The engine has only 66k miles on it.
It sounds to me like the tranny is slipping and about to go out, but I need another opinion.
Thanks,
Brandon

I don't think ford makes the best automatic trannys. Seems like everyone is having transmission probs lately. It does sound like it's slipping a little though.

Tab,

I'll second what Jason said. Not only does Ford NOT make the best automatic, they probably make the worst one. The old Chrysler TorqueFlites probably the best. They could take a lot of torque and were very reliable. After that was the GM TH400s. Somewhere near the bottom of the list were the Ford C4s, C6s, MXO, and likely whatever they're using now. They dropped their best engine several years ago (other than the 1964 427s) and are just about completely in the toilet with the Romeo engines now (they call them Tritons, modulars, etc.). Since the Probe is mostly Mazda, it can only be worse.

It's not that I don't like Fords, but it's like walking through the back yard. You try try to stay away from the piles the dog left behind...

Heavy transmission engagement can be many things, but the big "flare" between shifts is never a good thing, and it's usually all inside the aluminum tube. On the bright side, while it's deciding where it should go, she's got plenty of time to yell "Banzai! Taka! Taka!"

Don't take my word for it - send her to a transmission shop for an evaluation.

Later,
Vader

Probes (which are made by mazda, not ford) actually have a disturbingly large following on the net, check out www.probetalk.com, you'll get a lot more help there than you will posting here. Altough unless the trans is out of fluid or something it's pretty obvious it has some sort of problem that needs attention...

While you watch the engine have your girlfriend go from neutral to drive with her foot and the brake. Then neutral to reverse. Watch and see if the motor looks like it's going to jump out of the car. It could be a broken motor mount. You should also try changing the tranny fluid.

Tab,

Translated to mid-southern dialect, that can also include (Tora,Tora,Tora) Attack ! Attack! Attack!

Dive down on Yankee aircraft carrier deck with loaded Mitsubishi fighter - killing Yankees and getting a serious case of self-infricted FUBAR.

Before she infricts any other damage on that Probe (rectal probe ? ), send her to a tranny shop.

Man, she has horrible luck with cars. Her hand-me-down, a '93 Taurus, stalled out on her one day and after 4 visits and $500+ at the local repair shop, the POS still doesn't work. But, that's a different story.
Like I said, she just got the car, but I didn't mention that she just bought it from a used car dealer. Is there any legal way she can take it back to them after 10 days? It's obvious that they had prior knowledge to the problem, but they didn't say a word to her or her dad. She said they offer some kind of "we'll pay 10%" bullsh*t warranty, but that's hardly even worth mentioning.

Thanks,
Brandon

Hate to say it, but it happened to me once - only with a Chevy Cavalier. Bought it on a Friday, next Wednesday it was getting a tranny rebuilt. 89XXX miles on it... That sucked. But what the hell, we got a good deal on it...
