How long has your heater core lasted?

Hi all,

Just asking becuase I see so many posts about them leaking ect..

I still have the original and am thinking of preventative measures... Anyone have an opinion on this?

My fist one started leaking in May of 1992, or about six years and 18,000 miles after the car was built. The second failure was in June of 1995 - almost nine years to the day when the car was assembled, and at 34,988 miles. The last one leaked in March of 1999 at 44,077 miles. At that point, I completely flushed the system, ran clear water, flushed again, and installed DexCool mixture. At 48,190 miles, I'm either due for another heater core, or the DexCool is keeping the corrosion down to a minimum. I'm being optomistic (but still crossaing my fingers).

I'm fairly certain the long periods of idle storage were taking their toll on the cooling system. Low pH of the aging coolant was probably eating up cores as they sat there. I'm planning to go the full five years between coolant changes with the DexCool, playing the rolè of Guinea Pig. I'll let you know...

Still running on my original core, car has 249,000+ miles on it. I bought the car at 65,000 miles in Jan of 1994, so I guess it's possible that someone changed it on me before I bought the car?

Like you, I'm changing it this summer before it blows out on me.

This is the type of question that causes bad luck

I refuse to answer for fear mine will begin leaking tomorrow.
