Motor Mount replacement

I am trying to change the motor mounts before I install a new motor. How do you get the motor mount bolts out? The nuts are located in the frame and are very difficult to get to. All suggestions are welcome.

there isn't an easy way. some people have said they've heated and bent a wrench to get the right angle on the nuts. last time i did it i torched off the bolts and welded the lower mount in like they were on first gens and dozens of other cars. i know lot of people would say i butchered my car doing it, but it's my car.

I was actually able to replace BOTH of mine BY MYSELF when installing my rebuilt motor. I posted on how I did it a few months ago so if you search you may still find it. The jist of it is, find as many different sizes and shapes of (I believe) 14mm wrenches as you can. A long skinny one is a good one. There is a round hole in the sub frame about 1"-1.5" in diameter. You can use it to get the wrench in at a decent angle. PATIENCE! Not something you can just do quickly. Have a magnetic pickup handy for when the nuts fall into the subframe.

If I have some more time I'll try to find my original post. (Something crazy like "Secrets of Motor Mounts Revealed.")

I looked for the old post and did not find anything. Has anyone ever removed the lower a-frame to do this and how hard was that? It looks like that would be the easiest way to change the motor mounts. If I have this off should I replace the front springs? Just wondering.

I am in the same boat. I would like to change the mounts before I install my new 350. I was thinking about jacking the car up as high as possible to lower the a-arms for more room to get to the nuts. I plan on trying this today, so I'll let you know what I find.

Drop the A-arms and the nuts will be staring at you.

Sounds like a lot of work, but the extra work of taking the A-arms down makes the even more extra work with bent wrenches, skinned knuckles, etc., a good trade. No butchering, either.

Replace springs, balljoints, bushings while you're at it. Wow, 4 birds with one stone!

I am in the middle of a header install and decided I was going to change the motor mounts at the same time. That is until I saw the bolts on the back... You think GM could have welded the nuts to the subframe... My car has only 50,000 on it so I'll kepp the motor mounts I have for now. When I get ready to lower the car, I'll do the mounts while the front end is apart...
