I'm sure this will get some discussion but personally I would stick with a stock replacement pump. Just make sure you get a quality one like Sealed Power, Melling, etc. Sometimes high-vol. and/or high press. pumps can be more trouble than they're worth.

I agree. Get a Melling standard ($20) and you'll be fine. You only need HV if you are seriously racing w/thinner oil or you have worn motor w/bearing clearances of one inch (haha)

Go to Auto Zone and get a M55 (about $11 or $12) and a 55S screen, and order a Mr. Gasket high-pressure spring from Summit ($4 or $5). Use an IS-55E drive rod.

Curious- what about all that jazz about welding the pickup to the pump.. is that needed? I find it hard to believe that something so important as an oil pump would be made with a weak joint...

Excuse me, but Chevy has the absolute WORST pickup design known to man. I have heard of pickups falling off the pump, or actually out of as it may be. My 65 Mustang, and any other Ford I have worked on, has a bolted on pickup. The Chevy one is a press fit (read:hammered) into the base of the pump. Blech.

Oh and BTW, I am positive Summit sells the standard pumps too, just ask. The Melling part number is what RB listed, M55. (just a FYI, the Sealed Power pump is... melling )

i use a melling m55 and weld a brace to the pick up and bolt it to the pump body. i would never weld the pick up to the pump, to easy to distort something.
