700R4 to 5 Speed swap?
I have a restored '86 IROC Z with a new 305 Tuned Port GM crate motor and a 700R4 I had rebuilt with a trans go shift improver. I find the auto is boring to drive and i would like to convert it to a 5 speed. The car is all stock but are there any computer mods I would have to make? Are the location of the trans mount and driveshaft length/spline # the same also? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I did the swap on my car and it all bolt up. The starters are different though, and make sure you get the torque arm bracket with the t-5 my computer works fine with no mods and the only wiring thing you have to do is connect the two big wires going to the shifter. I haven't gotten around to figuring out the reverse lights yet though. My car is an 89IROC with a 350 tpi by the way.
Is the T-5 available in your area? Back in November I had my tranny seize up on me (while driving down that highway...my that was a lovely experience, let me tell you! Mr. Toads Wild Ride). The whole thing decided to weld itself together and it beat the hell out of the case. I could not rebuild it because the case was out of wack. So, I had to look for a used one. Straight from GM, they want about 2 grand. From a tranny shop, rebuilt, they wanted anywhere from 12 to 15 hundred. Even junkyards (where you have no idea what the condition of the tranny is) wanted 7 hundred bucks. So check into the cost of a T-5 first. I got lucky and found some guy who collected 3rd gen cars for parts. He was basically running a junkyard from his home. He only charged me 200 bucks for a used one and the rebuild on it from the shop was 350. So, I kinda got out cheap!
