gross weight

i was looking at my registration recently, and i read the gross weight portion of it. and to my surprise it read 2888 lbs. . I checked with other people, such as one of my friends with a saturn, and he checked his registration and it read 3123. now, my question is... what is gross weight... is it like curb weight? is my car just crazy light for some reason? how much should my car weigh? what's is gross weight?

the weight on there is probably some guess made by a guy at the DMV. I think my old Va registration even said "estimated weight".
When you registered the car, did they put it on a scale? Exactly...

if its just a guess.... then why is the number guessed all the way down to the 4th digit?

Sounds like a typo to me. There's no reasonable reason why it would say that; it's not what the mfr says your car's gross weight is; it's just some BS. Don't worry about it.
