What's the rest of your motor? Maybe somebody here with cam knowledge can point you in the right direction.
Compression, heads, valves, intake, carb, gears, converter, etc. The more specific you can be about your car, the more likely we can get it right.

When was it Edelbrock cams came out? Wasn't it the day after oil was discovered?
If an Edelbrock cam was buy one, get 20 free, I might buy half of one. But they're not, so I won't.
A company like Comp Cams, Crane Cams, or even GMPP has MUCH better cams for about the same price as the cam you just bought, but they're LIGHT YEARS ahead in design.
First things first though... Don't assume the cam's the problem. Just because you think it's the cam, doesn't mean it is.
What kind of problems are you having besides "not getting the power i should be"?
As RB said, more info please.

My engine:
edelbrock 1406
edelbrock perf rpm intake
edelbrock torquer cam
edelbrock timing chain
roller rockers
2.02 1.60 58cc heads
summit headers
flowmaster exhaust
stock dist and vacuum advance
3.42 rear non posi
700r4
my problem is i don't believe i am getting what i should be out of my engine. it is set at +10* of timing at the dist and +4 at the cam.(any less at the dist.and it wont idle) it seems to spark knock when slightly accelerating but not at wot.it seems weak and not having as much muscle as i expected is this because the cam is too big? it accelerates and takes off like a less than stock 305. Any suggestions?

I forgot -
You need an adjustable vacuum advance. The pinging you describe is from the vac adv staying active at too low of vacuum. What it needs to do is to drop out as soon as you give it some gas; as it is, you have to almost floor it to lower the vacuum enough to make it come out of vac advance.

It isn't "bad". It just isn't as good as the other companies cams that cost about the same amount of money.
(I thought I said that already??
)
If you want to learn more, go to www.chevyhiperformance.com and do a search for cams, cam profiles, cam duration, cam timing, etc.
You will learn A LOT
I wouldn't hurt to go to http://www.compcams.com/information/tutorials/ and learns some stuff.
