how does EGR work?
i've been getting an EGR code now for awhile.. the SES light stays on almost constantly now and when it's on the engine runs like poop.. when it's off, it purrs.. after clearing the codes with the battery dc'd it now only triggers 32.. SO... EGR is probably sticking, right? How does it work? I can't check it with a vacuum gauge right? It's an '86 305tpi IROC.. 139,000 miles... anything i should know before yanking off my plenum to change the EGR?

i had a general idea how it works, my question is this.. if the EGR is staying closed at idle, would the O2 sensor read a lean condition and then richen the mixture causing it to run rough? My car smells a little gassy when the light is on, but it always has because I think it has a chip. I've never pulled off the kickpanel and looked at the ECM, maybe I should do that. There's such a massive difference in how it runs, what would happen if the EGR wasn't operating correctly?
Thanks for the page though, it's bookmarked now and I'll put the link up on my site.

i have found the egr stuff sucks, but is necesary. you are best off replacing it since it has miles on it. just confirm it is getting a vacum signal. When u got to replace it, Do not pass go, do not get 200 bucks, as to say, DO NOT GO TO pep boys or napa or anything. u are best off getting the right one. write down the number off the top of it and go to the dealer. there were 3 different types of egrs and only one will work.

There's a tech article here on how the EGR works as well.
