Ok, today after driving around with the "starter fixing tool" (crowbar) i noticed my car was making a rubbing noise. So, i looked all over trying to find the sound and i finally found it. But, i don't know what the name of the part is i asked my friend what it was and he also didn't know. So, i decided to see if u guys could help me. There is a plastic peice that is between the oil pan and the Tranny pan, this plastic is rubbing against whatever is above it and making an annoying sound. If i pull at the plastic it stops. I think when i drove through the puddle (see msg titled "starter questions" about puddle info) it made this plastic peice rub. I'm wondering if anything above this plastic peice could be damaged, and or if its a common part to be "rubbing" against eachother. I am trying to figure out away to fix it. In the meantime any info would be helpful.

Thx again!

Abe,

I wouldn't get too carried away with trying to flex that cover around with the engine running. If the plastic decides to let go, your fingers are going to be right in the torque converter/flex plate - you'll end up typing your next post with your lips.

Stop the engine, remove teh cover bolts, and the cover. Any interference should be apparent on the inside of the plastic. No, the cover is not supposed to touch the flex plate or converter. Yes, it is possible that your "log ride" through the puddle distorted the warm plastic into something it isn't supposed to be. If you can't reshape the cover, get a replacement from your local recycler. $10.00 would be a lot to pay for a used cover, and I'd be surprized if it was that much.

hahaha I'm with you Engineboy, too funny, man. Anyways, it sounds like you're describing the flywheel cover, in which case Vader is correct, DO NOT SCREW WITH IT WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING!!! Should just be four easy to reach 9/16 bolts and it'll drop right off. You may want to use a degreaser and clean any accumulated oil or road grit that lies in the bottom of it. Good luck.

I used to work at a tranny shop....

It's called a dust cover, and they should be 10MM bolts, NOT 9/16ths!

You can actually just leave it off...

Ok, maybe you shouldn't (since you seem to be the type of person that likes to hydroplane through puddles) <grin>

I had the same thing happen with my '91. I bombed through a huge puddle, then heard the same noise. I thought I really messed s!@t up, but I just backed the screws off a little bit and snugged them back up and it was fine. They are right - should be 10mm.

It's the flywheel cover.... and I took mine off about a year ago (not reccomended)... If you bottomed out good enough to dent the plastic flywheel cover, chances are you may have bent the flywheel. What inspired you to crawl under your car while it was running?
