how many ground cables?

i'm thinking that i may be missing a ground strap on my block which may be a reason why i'm having troubles starting my engine.

how many are there typically on an engine and where abouts would they be located?

There is a braided ground strap from the rear of the right head to the firewall. There should also be at least one ECM reference ground in the intake near the distributor. Of course, the battery negative lead should ground at the engine, and the smaller battery negative lead should connect to the ground distribution node on the inner fender or radiator support.
