new 305 combo

Hey,
I have a cousin who has a '85 Z28 with a stock motor and carb. He wants to get new heads/intake/cam. He wants to go with Vortec L31 heads, a Super Victor intake (for Vortec heads), and a comp Extreme Energy cam. This will be fed by a new Holley double pumper. My question is, is this combo going to do him any good? He is running low 15's with NOTHING done to the engine. Also, any suggestions on where to get decent heads for a decent price? :hail: :hail:

Thanks,
Dave

i heard that teh 305 vortec's are crap and some say they are worse then stock. the valves are smaller, and it wont work well. You could port out a set of LB9 heads. That would be the cheapest way, then if you were gunna run a high cr engine, then get the L98 vette alum. heads and port them. Next up would be the SR 305 torquers. after that, you could get an aftermarket 350 head and have it milled too 56-60cc's as long as the valves dont get bigger then 1.94/1.5. good luck to your friend

He said L31 (350) Vortec heads, not the L30 (305) Vortecs. That might be a bit much of an intake on that 305. SDPC has pretty decent prices on those heads.

The L30 Vortecs are just as good as the L31s. You just need to open up the intake to 1.94 from 1.84. They are cheap to get at the wrecker for this reason. But they still need a proprietary intake so doing some 305 heads (other than TBI) is a great money saver.

Check the link at the end of my sig.
