Oil..

For the past few weeks my 91 GTA has been running spectacular, including yesterday. I started it twice, this morning, I go to start it.. NOTHING.. the motor just turns..
I noticed that I COMPLETELY ran out of oil, eventhough my gage said it was fine..
My question is.. what did running out of oil do?
I mean, did it sease something? and how can I get it starting again..

Thx for any help..

oh, btw..
howmany seconds on my 0-60 would 3.43 gears lower if I originally have 2.73s
OR what would be the best bet, concidering gas money on gears.. thx

the oil preasure gauge has nothing to do, or very little, with telling you how much oil is in the pan. the dip stick is for checking oil level.

is there a big black spot ont he ground where you park your car? has it been burning oil? if you completely ran it dry the oil would have to go somewhere, either leaking from somewhere or you are burning almost as much oil as gas. are you getting lots of blue smoke out the tail pipes?

also i would worry about more about finding the origin of this lack of oil problem and determine what damage you have done to the motor before worrying about how much 3.42s will improve your off the line performance compared to 2.73s.

Well, I just found out what it was
I need a new fuel pump, but I need your help on this one..
Am I better off buying a stock fuel pump for $140 Can or buying a performance one? Something with a little more kick, because I intend to spend around $3000 in the next year.. so which way is best?

and no, there is no big black spot where I keep my car..

Thx..

exactly how much oil is your car burning? cause it sounds like you have some serious blowby (ie bad rings) if you ran it dry on oil and there were no leaks (that is a pretty serious problem if it is burning as much oil as make it sound like). is there alot of blue smoke coming out the tail pipes? is the pcv system hooked up and working properly?

anyway, i dont know much about FI cars, but you should be able to here fuel pump prime if you turn the key forward (but dont turn it all the way forwad that it cranks) and i think there is also a relay for the fuel pump. check that to. the fuel pump on a FI car is not a fun thing to replace. its quite a bit of work.

okay, so you have leaky valve seals, like most SB chevs. does this blue smoke go away after a couple of minutes? cause leaky valve seals will not result in your car running dry of oil. not even remotely close. you must have a leak somewhere........

is that problem just going to get worse?

well it wont get any better unless it is fixed. leaking valve seals itslef is not a real serious problem, but it could get some what worse, but it wont cause massive oil consumption or anything.

If you've been running it without much oil, it might not be a bad idea to loosen the two motor mount bolts, jack the engine up a lil and drop the exhaust and oil pan and have a look at the bearing farthest away from the oil pump (closet to the front of the car) and if you see any brass/deep straches, put your tail between your legs cause you messed up your engine. Note that nothing but I believe 16 oil pan bolts, 2 starter bolts (you do not have to take off the wires that provide energy to the starter, just move it aside cause atleast for me, i had to remove it to get to 3 oil pan bolts. 2 motor mt bolts and the exhaust and two bolts if you have that style block to get to the actual bearings/rods.)

That would be wise to do if you love your hog =]

Get a compression test. THAT and only that will tell you what kinda shape your rings are in.

The rings were totally shot on my 305 and it burned about 2 quarts of oil in 2 hours.. it made 65psi average on all cylinders. It should be ~140 psi.

Its not too hard to do, its just a little gauge with an end that gets screwed in place of the spark plug, and then crank it over a few times.

I HIGHLY reccommend you do that ASAP (after you put in more oil of course)
