Think i blew a head gasket..

but it just doesnt seem right to me.. I checked the oil a few hours before hand it was nice and clean.. I finished up some last engine work which took around 4 hours to complete.. Got it all back together and started it up. ran fine.. then it just started spitting out cream colored oil.. checked dip stick and it looked like a vanilla carmel milkshake.. ruined my whole night since i just finished the 3 month project... But what gets to me is how did water/coolant get into the oil so quickly? i mean it was fine.. We took it for a drive and it was super healthy.. Then all of a sudden my oil looks like a melted creamsicle.

The car still runs great.. but after i discovered the oil.. i shut it off and left it. Think its the head gasket? or what else could it be?

Re: Think i blew a head gasket..

What work did you do? It could be a head gasket, but it could also be the intake manifold gasket.

There are water passages that allow coolant to flow from the heads through the intake and then back to the heads.... If the gasket fails around one of the passages, coolant can leak down into the valve lifter area.

I had an intake manifold gasket go on me two summers ago. Fortunately the top part of the gasket failed and coolant leaked outward onto the head.

The picture below shows the coolant passage where my gasket failed. The little red arrow points to it......

I did some valve seal work on it.. I put the spark plugs in.. which werent even tightened all the way.. So the compression was probably all over the place.. But as soon as i started it... I noticed the light colored oil coming out(had the valve covers off) and shut the car off to prevent any further damage

Alright.. now im really confused.. I checked the radiator and overflow tank and they are both practically empty.. how did all the coolant drain into the motor and oil in the minute i had it running when the car was absolutely fine a few hours before hand? and the spark plugs were all loose as well so what went wrong?

Re: Think i blew a head gasket..

it seems like an intake manifold gasket. Pull the intake manifold off, and then post again with what you found.

Re: Think i blew a head gasket..

Ill have to check that out then.. When i remove and put back the distributor.. What do i have to do? Thats my only concern with removing the intake manifold.

Also.. Do the exhaust still spit out white smoke even with the intake manifold gasket blown? because mine did alittle bit

I would pull the intake and start over with that. Make sure you get it straight and get some good gaskets such as Felpro that have a sealing bead around all openings and put some sealant around the water ports. Get the oil and filter changed out so you don't have any of the old left in it to cause any other problems.
