Well, it's supposed to be done in intervals like an oil filter, and like an oil filter, it's neglect only becomes obvious when it's grossly overdue. If you start having unexplained lean WOT situations, or a stumble under load, it could be getting plugged up.

They are in-line with the fuel lines, right in front of the rear-axle on the driver side. It's easy to spot when you get under the car. it's a round cyllinder, about 2" in diameter, maybe 3 or 4 inches long. Make sure that when you decide to replace it that you use tubing wrenches and not normal wrenches. If there is any rust at all on the ends, spray the crap out of it with penetrant and go at it later. If you twist the gas lines or strip the bolts you're in for a major headache.

I don't think there are any "good ones", either. Summit made a version for $20, but they stopped... I guess the demand wasn't high enough. For a stock motor I assume the Ac/Delco ones flow enough. You can find 'em at Strauss Auto, Walmart, Pep Boys, etc for about $10.
