Motor Work

Ok dokie folks. I'm in the process of building my poor lil 305. It's of the '84 variety, last three casting numbers are 201, in case any wants to know. Thinking about putting a decent cam in it, probably in the .465 lift range. I was wondering if slappin' some 1.6's on this motor would be a good idea? Would reuse them when I build my 383. Should put the lift range around .486. Plan on having my heads completly reworked. Duration at .050 cam lift is around 230 degrees, what size stall should I use? I have a 2800 stall waiting on me, will this be enough? Also having everything possible done to the block, line honed, everything trued and what not. Intake will be a Edelbrock Performer, been ported a bit. Looking at about a 10 to 1 CR. Anyone got an ideas about the streetability of this thing? Thanks much.

I can only speak from what I've heard specifically about 305's, but have experience on other SBC's.

Unless you do something to those heads beyond a valve job, you're going way over anything they can handle, either for flow or springs. Rather than put any money into what are at best marginal heads after a lot of money has been spent, get a set of World S/R Torquer 305's. They'll have the bigger ports and valves you need to make use of that cam. The standard springs should be okay since your effective lift is under .500.

You didn't say anything about exhaust, but headers, high flow cat and cat-back should be added to let the other improvements work.

It should be streetable with proper tuning, although I'm not sure where you're getting the 10:1 CR without special pistons. 9.0 - 9.5 would be more like it with typical 305 pistons.

Except for the rockers, cam & manifold, not much else is going to be worthy of a 383. The headers that work best on a 305, for instance, would be too restrictive for a 383. Certainly the heads shouldn't be used, especially factory heads.
