Removing dowel pins

Does anyone have any tips for removing the dowel pins in the deck of the block? I tried using vise-grips and they'll spin, but I can't get them to come out.

Thanks,

-Kyle

If you have a way to get them extremely cold, the metal will contract and then they should come out.

I don't have a way to do that (no industrial sized walk in freezer... ). Is there any other way, or should I just have the machine shop remove them?

Mine were rusted on to the heads when I pulled the motor, LOL! Sorry, but I cant help, thought you just might want a laugh. Why do you want them out anyway? If you are taking the block to be machined they will pull them easy enough for you.

I'm getting the block decked so I figured I'd take them out. I guess I'll just leave them in there and let the machine shop pull them.

just drive then in with a BFH and a punch, or let the shop pull then, they use a collet type puller if they use a puller at all. i believe vise grips or driving then in is the more common removal methods

I tried using vise grips to pull them, but all I managed to do was create metal shavings. I'll mess with it more tonight and if I can pull em, I'll just drive them in.

Just my opinion, but Peterson ViseGrips are good as welding clamps, and that's about it. Import "copies" are even worse. For gripping items for twisting, they suck.

If you have a diffcult application, try Knipex Cobra pliers, or better yet, ChanNelLock 410 pliers. They just plain don't slip. I've actually won bets removing things that others have tried to twist out and almost completely fornicated with ViceGrips. Suckers...they fall for it every time.
