Preformance Chip? How do I check?

I bought my first thirdgen not too long ago and I love the car. I have a 305TBI and it has run cold since I got it. It runs well, really well for a 305 especially with TBI. The previous owner didn't mention anything about it, but I suspect it may have a preformance chip. Since many chips recommend it I thought this might also explain the low temps. It never runs over 175 even when it's hot outside. My question is: Where would the ship be that I could check it? I've heard that it's real easy to put a new chip in, but I don't know where to look. I have a new thermostat sitting here (195 degree) and I want to check the chip situation before I do anything with it. Thanks in advance.

A colder thermostat would also make it run cold, along with a fan switch, and a custom chip. The chip is in the computer, which is under the passenger side dash. Remove the three 7mm screws, drop the panel down, and then remove the two screws holding the computer in place. Drop it down and remove the access panel on the computer, and the chip is in there.

If there is a performance chip in there DONT use the 195 stat!

Can anyone give me more detailed instructions on getting to the chip? I dropped the panel, passenger side, down and I've got a black box on the left about 10 to 12 inches wide. I already took out three screws and there are still more up top. I stopped and came to ask you guys for some help. From your first description it looks like I'm going in the wrong direction. I have all the screws laid out and can put it back together, so I'm not in any trouble yet, just don't want to screw anything up.
Thanks.

Hi again, I opened up the panel and I have a black box over to the left about 12 inches wide. Then I have a metal box over to the far right that is held in place by a three sided plastic bracket that fits around it (the bracket is white/tan). I'm guessing I probably have to open that black box over there, but I've already taken three screws out and there are more holding it up top. I want to check on what I'm doing here before I go any farther. Thanks for the help.
