Has anyone tried the plastic 99-02 fbody gas tank in a 3rd gen yet?
I know it was discussed several months back. Just wondering if anyone had any results yet.
I am working on this now... so far I have the tank but had to order another sending unit because the one I have is broken. But, I have checked the resistance on the level sensor and It has different readings. My old sensor readings were 11.4ohms = empty and 101ohms = full. The 2000 gas tank is 40ohms = empty and ~240ohms = full. So when I hook up the tank to my car 1/2 tank reading on the guage is actually an empty tank. You might have to go with an aftermarket guage... I'm not sure yet I just got done doing the readings.
I did find a few guages avalible at summit ... only one company makes them as far as I can see, Autometer.
The look kind of ugly but I gues They would Do the job

I took some measurements last night and found the the band strap locations are the same. I have heard the the filler neck might be longer but it doesn't matter because most of the filler neck on the plastic tank is mostely rubber hose. So you can make it any size you want.. I took some pics and I'll post them later because right now I'm at work.

Yup they are empty/full readings... I think GM switched over with these new plastic tanks.

I tried that ... If you tried to get the empty line correct... (which would = 11.4 ohms) then when the tank is full, the resistance is 15ohms ( about an 1/8 of a tank)
I think I have another way to do it..... I'll let you know more later... It's just a theory for now...

As you can see in the pic my gas line and return lines are cut.... Does anyone know how they connect these hard plastic lines to the metal ones? How long are the lines? and do you have any pics?
I went to a gm dealer today to find out more about the fuel lines and it seems they are a little bit differeent than the ones on our 3rd gens. I'm still unclear about the connectors that are on the ends of them. I was going to order them but they want $20 a pices for these short lines... I'm gonna try and get them from a Yard.
From what I could see on the computer screen at the dealer is they have a quick connector on the ends in stead of a 6-an fitting or so. When I get them I'll take pics and should you what they look like.
I hope this is worth it in the end....

I think you can use a piece of rubber hose and hose clamps to join the plastic to the steel lines. At least w/ carbed engines- don't know about FI...

I think you could use the rubber fuel rail lines found on ford and some of the early 3.1 and 3.3-3.8 gm cars they are quick disconnect but are rubber lines in stead of plastic
It was actually a pretty straight forward installation. Napa has some adaptors to go from the treaded adaptors to the quick click style. The biggest problem i had was the return line.... The return line hooks up to the pickup assembly and goes thru some kind of plug.... for some reason the gas would not gothru it so i had to gut it out so the gas would flow....
The other problem is the level sensor is different... but you can buy an aftermarket level guage to work with it.
our cars guage works with 0-90 ohm sensor ... the new tanks are 40-240 ohms.... so if you hook it up to your guage ...when the tank is empty your guage will read about half or so.
you check out some pics on my ftp site.

Everything I've ever heard from people who are familiar with both 3rd and 4th gen sending units say their not interchangeable. However Magnus put his old sender from his 97 sending unit into his 99 model sending unit.

As you can see in the top left of this ad you can get the fitting to use AN lines. Then you can just buy the SN fitting that converts your stock hard-line to a AN fitting and you should be able to run a short about foot length of stainless braided hose from the tank to the fuel lines.

That'll work, I wonder if those are available anywhere else, since they're so high.
Napa had all the fittings I needed... I have been running this setup since last year with no problems... I can'tt say that it is a better setup but I needed to change out the tank anyways and this was a good match for me..
Just to update my setup:
I currently have a 350 TBI with a zz4 cam and 305 heads and flat top pistons with about 10:1 compression.
I dynoed it at 300hp and 400 ft/lbs torque
I what to put the lt1 intake on it so that's why I also wanted the higher pressure fuel pump. I'm also running an aftermarket fuel regulator ... it works great but man is it working overtime tring to get the stock fuel pressure down to 15 psi hehe
