1. Find #1 firing by compression: put your thumb over the hole while somebody bumps the starter, or put a piece of fuel line in the hole and listen for it, etc.

2. Leave the motor at about 12° BTDC of #1 firing.

3. Turn the oil pump rod about 30° away from straight front-to-rear, going from right rear to left front.

4. Hold the distributor in the position it will go in when it's in there; if you have the older large one, that will be with the batt & tach terminals directly to the driver's side, if it's the newer small one, the flat side of the dist housing will go straight to the driver's side.

5. Rotate the shaft so the rotor points about 20° toward the front of straight to the driver's side.

6. Drop it in. The rotor will turn CW as it drops in. It should end up approximately 22½° to the driver's side of straight ahead. Put the cap on, and the plug wires on it; #1 will be just to the left of straight ahead, the rest will go around the cap CW in the firing order (18436572)

7. Hook up the primary wires.

8. Reach in the window and crank it up. The timing should be somewhere between 6 and 10° BTDC, which is near where you want it.
