Why do I get occasional dieseling?
I know dieseling can be caused by to high or idle and to much timing.
I have my idle set at ~850rpm in park or N. And my base timing is set at 5* advance. Yet I still get dieseling sometimes.
My carb is running VERY rich. Could this be the cause? Im getting a 600cfm holley soon until I get the heads and cam and need my current carb.

dieseling can also occur because of excessive carbon build up..
if you're running really rich with a carb, that could be why...
the carbon heats up with the engine running
you kill the ignition...
the carbon is still hot enough to ignite the remaining mixture... and the engine turns over a few more times before it shuts off...

I run 93 octane all the time just in case.
I bet thats my problem...the carbon buildup that is. My car runs very rich. Im gonna take the jets out of the 600 and put them into my carb and see if I can get it to run better. If not Ill just use the 600 on my car.
I turn it off in gear if the choke since the idle is higher. It usually doesnt diesel then.

Just because you havce a 600 cfm carb is the not the reason for running rich. Before taking the carb out and messing with the jets, adjust the air/fuel ratio. Also what is your fuel pressure at, it should be between 7 and 9 psi.

I have a 670cfm street avenger. Floats are set correctly and I jetted the carb down as far as I could with my jet kit. I adjusted the air/fuel screws with a vaccum gauge which helped but still to much gas.
I have a junk 600cfm holley Im going to take the jets out of and try in my carb. BTW my fuel pressure is set at 5psi. I have a mallory fuel pressure regulator and a gauge. So I dont think thats the problem. I think if I step down to like a #58 jet in the primaries and maybe a #62 in the secondaries It would help.
Right now I have #64 in the primaries and #66 in the secondaries.

I was getting dieseling too. I bet that you need a little more advance at base. I would try about 10 deg advance to start. I believe that stock is 8 deg advance. This worked for me at one point. Give it a shot.

Ill give it a shot. For the past few days Ive just been turning it off in drive. So far no more dieseling.
I had the same problem too, thats why I asked you to try to shut it off in gear, thats what I did and now I can shut it off in P, any time and it does not deisel at all. Unless I use 87 oct. But I always use 93.

It probably has something to do with my fuel problem. WAY to much fuel is probably causing it. I just got a 600cfm holley im gonna rebuild and try it and see what I can do with it.
You could be Ideling too high, this is just a idea, when my car was doing this, I set the idler, lower at about 500 rpms that also helped a lot, also clean you carb with some carb cleaner. Just an idea.
