engine wont run
ok well i made sure that timing is right, i can feel the piston at the top for TDC, the mark on the HB is right where its soposted to be and the rotor is pointing at cylnder #1.
but what happends when i crank it over it is just cranks then backfires out the carb, so i switch the rotor around 180 and it does the same thing. i know for sure tis not timing, could the valves be stuck or not opening/closing all the way?
or what else do you all reccoment i do to make the dam thing run, i would like to get it running so i can drive my truck, also i knwo its getting spark because everyonce in a while it will backfire out the exhaust, thats how my grass got lit on fire.
thanks for any help

well i think that maybe you got a few bent pushrods or alot for that matter. i had this rouble with my monte and hell i had bent push rods and bent valves. check yer compression on the cylinders that will tell you if you have some bent valves well if that doesnt work let me know

Is this a newly built engine or did it just die all of a sudden?
When you bring the piston to TDC, you need to have someone hold their finger in the #1 plug hole while you bring the piston up. That way you will know for sure that you're on the compression stroke (it'll push air out around the finger) and the timing is correct. Stab the distributor so that the rotor points to #1, then when you put the wires on make sure to start the firing order at that cap terminal. Also make sure your firing order is correct (1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 clockwise rotation.)
It could be a valvetrain issue. If the rockers are too tight and the valves don't close, you get no compression which means no fire. If they're too loose and don't open, you get no fuel/air charge which means no fire.
It could also be a wiring issue....not enough juice to the coil....no chassis ground....there are a LOT of possibilities.

no i just bought the truck, the owner before me changed a head gasket and couldnt find the right timing to get her to run, so thats where i am at, i know the firing order is correct, and i know all that other stuff, i just did it on my boss's truck and on my camaro many times.
i just need to know what the heck is goin on, well the possibalities of whats wrong. thanks anyways, i guess i will be taking off these heads and tosson on my olg LG4 heads and new pushrods if they are bent.
