Gas Milage

Lately I've been getting extremely poor gas milage...about 80 miles to the tank. I have an 82 and I believe the gas tank on 82's was smaller when I fill up I can only squeeze in about 11 and a half gallons....I don't think my gas tank is that small. Also I believe I have a hole or leak in my exhaust manifold...could that be the sole reason for my gas milage or what else can it be? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Well I do notice a strong gas smell but I think its because of the manifold problem...I sometimes get exhaust fumes coming into the cabin...What is TTT?

Have you tried to track down the gas smell? Usually you can get pretty close to where it's coming from by using your sniffer.

Does it have a carb or is it injected? What engine, stock 305? If so you have big problems.

Well I'm pretty certain the gas smell is the exhaust manifold leak....there is no real gas smell leaking into the car, unless the exhaust is masking a different gas leak. I have a 305 out of an 89 Caprice that had about 60,000 miles on it...the original 305 blew a head gasket at about 125,000. It is carbed.

Gasoline smell from the exhaust?!?
If so you have some issues man.
First thing you need to do is get under there and look for wet gasoline soaked spots to make sure it isn't just a leak.
If no leak can be found next up is to yank your plugs and see if they are fouled with gas.
If the plugs are fine check your timing.
If that is all a ok then it's time to rebuild your Q-jet or you have a valve/cam issue.
That caprice 305 in your car with the 700r4 ought to be getting closer to 20mpg. Something is wrong and it should be easily found.

I have a recently rebuilt Q-jet in there...so I know that isn't the problem...and I believe my time is correct...and I have a TH350 not the 700R4...but I know I shouldn't be getting th 7mpg regardless. I'll check out for any leaks...I'm pretty certain my manifold has a hole in it, but I just haven't found it when I've looked for it....my milage just keeps getting worse. Anyone have any ideas why I can only fit like 12 gallons in my tank? On a side not if it is my manifold and possibly my O2 sensor that is causing this, anyone know of any CA emission legal headers I can replace my faulty manifold with? I appreciate everyone's help so far, thanks.
