the highest lift cam a carbed LO5 can take?

given new springs and roller rockers aside and being carbed ...edel 750 with performer rpm intake, what is the best cam for a wanted power range from 3000 to 6000rpm without machining the swirl port weights?got th350 tranny and 3.73 gears..t/y ..oh yeah its the roller LO5

The LO5 was not built for those kinds of speeds, nor were those heads intended for high rpm power. If it's even possible without machining, I think it would be a complete waste of time and money to swap in a cam like that without building up the bottom end and getting different heads that are made for high-rpm airflow. Even the 350 HO wasn't made for that kind of rpm range, it redlines at 5700 rpm. I think you should shoot for a less aggressive set-up with that engine if you don't want to spend a ton of money on it.

I agree with flyway but I have been able to get a balanced 305 to hold up to 7,000 rpm with iron 58 cc ported heads, carb, headers, intake, msd distributor, and a 112 degree split durration 270degree/int&260degree/exh@.050 with .455 lift. Stock rods,Pistons&bottom end.
It was quite a dog at sub 2,200 rpm and had an obvious rough idle. But 4,000 rpm in 3rd with a 50 shot of funny gas was fun and that engine suprisingly lasted me 3 years before I sold it(still running).
Without balancing I wouldn't reccomend tryin anything over 6,000 but the 5,700 drop out is mostly the stock hei's fault once you have the cam and right set up, and a better ignition system will get you up to 7,000 easily.

anyway ... I would like to have the little extra womph from about 3000 to whatever...my gearing is doing all the low end I want, and it aint a daily driver, motor has less than 3000 miles on it....it isnt like throwing a cam , springs , and roller rockers on it is alot of money, they will go in whatever heads I WILL get down the road , but no head money now....I dont see putting this stuff under the LO5 heads right now as wasting money because it can be transfered...again thanks for the future info

You might look into a Comp Cams XE256 cam, or XE262 if you'll be getting new heads soon. If you're just looking for a cheap cam until you get the heads, Summit has C&L kits for $80. I would reccomend pn k1102 (204/214) or k1103 (214/224).

Oops, didn't see that , sorry about that, must mean it's getting late...

If you want a roller cam for up high (2500-6500?) I would go with a Comp XR 276, or if you want really high the XR 282. They're only rated for 1900-5600 and 2200-5800 respectively, but that's for a 350 motor, the rpm range will be shifted up a few hundred rpm for the smaller displacement 305. You should probably also invest in a rev kit since you're going pretty high, you won't want any valve float. Here's a link to one, it's a lot cheaper than the Comp Cams or AFR ones: http://www.primediapowerpages.com/cg...00216&2D101087

I only use Comp Cams and Lunati (for perf. cams), but if you prefer Crane or something else I can look it up and make a reccomendation for you.

Hope that helps...

Look at the Elgin factory replacement cam #E1136 spec'd at .462"/.470", 210*/215* @ .050", 110* LSA.

It's fairly affordable, but FWIW, it's pushing the spring to valve seal clearance on the swirl port heads.

I have a set of #193 heads and with .050" of clearance, the max lift allowed is .465"

Due to different style seals as well as variances in guide boss height, you may be OK, but I'd certainly check it IIWY.

If you don't have the clearance, get these tools.
