Car Died Last Night

Hey all,

I just bought my 92 camaro RS a month and a half ago, and it's been working great up until this point. I haven't made many modifications to it yet because i haven't had it for very long. I did install an Edelbrock Air Filter, and B&M Shift kit a couple of weeks ago, that has been the extent of my work so far.

Last night while I was driving, I went about half way down on the gas and the car just started to die. I got no acceleration, but I was able to coast with the engine running into a nearby gas station. As I was pulling in, all my instruments died and I lost my power steering. The battery is fine because I have my headlights and panal lights, but when I go to restart the engine, it turns over but will not start. I have heard stories about the metal on the edelbrock shorting out ignition wires, but I couldn't find anything visibly wrong when I took it off. The injectors seem to be spraying fuel, but the engine still will not start.

Has anyone experienced this problem, or known someone who has? Any ideas and/or suggestions that anybody has would be a big help. I don't like the idea of sending it to a garage, but it's looking like I may have to.

Repaired

I took it in to get looked at today because I am working a 60 hour week and didn't have time to take care of it myself. I just got off the phone with the repair guy and he said that they fixed it by replacing the "coil" and distributor. When I asked him what coil he was talking about he told me that there was only one coil in the car. The bill with labor is going to run me $160. Does this sound right to you guys?

not sure...but if it runs for 160 dollars and they gave you a new distributor...sound pretty good.

A '92 should have a separate ignition coil (not in the distributor), and a pickup coil in the base of the distributor.

Their labor rate seems about normal for a distributor R&R, including setting the base timing. You probably could have done it yourself in an hour or two, and the $160 labor charge would have easily covered the cost of a decent digital multimeter and a good timing light.

Yeah, you're right and I am not usually a "take it to the shop and wipe my hands clean" kinda guy, but I was really in a bind this week and needed to get it done asap.

I have lots of plans for my car (many of which i'm sure I will need advice on) and I don't plan on taking any of them to the shop... well except for the gears, those I need done professionally.
