Exhaust manifold glowing in one section....
I've had problems with overheating and have done everything normal to overcome it - yesterday I realized that after driving a while my driver's side exhaust manifold was glowing in front of the number 5 cylinder. I have the 350. I did a little research and learned that retarded timing and bad injectors can cause this. I'm assuming its not timing because it would seem like both manifolds would be fully aglow, not just in front of ONE cylinder.
What do I need to do? Assuming I have a bad/leaking injector, do I need to replace it with something, something better, or have it cleaned? I'm in the dark on this subject, and I would just like someone to tell me what to do about my injectors.
I'm going to assume this is an injector problem, but what else should I check? Thanks.

Thats what I figured too, but what should I do about it? I've tried a couple injector cleaners in a bottle but none of them worked. A mechanic recommended a certain one to me but I cant remember what it was - I think it had a number like "44" in the name. I was gonna try and find that but anyways, what do you think I should do? Send them all off to be cleaned or replace them or what?

I just found out the stuff i was looking for is called BG 44K, does anybody know if I can get it at a local parts shop or do I need to order it? I'm going to post a new topic just to make sure more people see the question, but feel free to post a reply. Thanks. If that doesnt work I'll send them off to Cruzin performance.

Well go easy, it sounds like that cylinder is about ready to burn the piston if you get frisky with it. I'm not an F.I. guy, (Ok a mechanical FI guy maybe) but that's a classic sign of a lean cylinder.
You should be able to get BG 44K from a dealership.
If you have a gm dealership with a quicklube on the lot. Most of them offer a $65 intake/injector "flush" and use the BG 44K for it along with a metered solution introduced to the intake via the brake booster.
But then again if I were you I would first read the plugs then if it is still probably and injector issue replace all the injectors at once after a new fuel filter.

Replace them? That sounds EXPENSIVE - I was just going to send them off to Cruzin Performance if necessary but not replace them. Do you really think that's necessary? I will check them electrically first, to make sure their coils are ok.

Definatly want to pull the plug and have a look at it. If the insulation is pink and blistered or white with no deposits then that cyl is going way lean due to a clogged injector.

Just the plug (connection?) or the whole injector? BTW, is there a bunch or rings/gaskets/whatever to replace when taking the injectors in and out? Cuz I'd like to take them out and clean them but I'd like to know what I'm getting into, like what it takes to do all that stuff. Thanks.

unscrew the sparkplug is what i was trying to say. Take the sparkplug out nearest to the glowing section and have a look at the insulator on the plug.

Oh, ok. I'd still like to know what needs to be done to remove/replace injectors correctly, rings, gaskets, and all. Thanks.
