Smog pump disabling
Now before someone tells me that "disabling" my smog pump is illegal...I know....regardless this is something I want to do for a number of different reasons.
Now I want to keep my smog pump and other hoses/connections all hooked up since the smog police out here are starting to become real tough with things...but is there some way to sort of "hollow-out" the smog pump so its just a dummy pully there, not pushing any air thru, and not turning any sort of internal parts (slightly less drag), yet keeping everything "looking" stock????
Ideas/suggestions???

Remove the belt from your A.I.R. pump. Turn the pump by hand, then compare it to the effort required to turn your power steering pump. If you really want to free up some energy, switch to a manual steering box. A properly functioning A.I.R. pump takes almost no power (about 1½-2 HP at redline RPM).
vader is right, there is really no HP gains (if so not noticable) when removing the smog pump. Most people take them out to save a few pounds in the front end and create space in the engine compartment.
IF your smog pump was frozen like mine was, then thats a good indication to remove it.
They do also sell delete pulleys for serpentine systems. But its cheaper and easier to reroute your belt. Youll need one thats 3 inches longer .. i think

part of the problem is that I have had it off for like the last 2 years and I put it + all the other junk a couple of days ago and I think its partially sezed or on its way out.....its squealing like a pig and you can feel it "binding" at some points. I want/need to put things back onto the car since the smog police around here are starting to do more roadside visual inspections.....thats why I want to put it back on...but really just for appearance sake.

funny/makes you want to put your hand through the wall story. My friends dad was telling me about a friend of his who has a 76 vette. Im not sure how it is everywhere else but in ontario if your car is more then 20 years old you dont have to pass an emissions test. Due to this fact he decided to remove all of his emissions stuff off of his car because that just makes sense right? Well he got pulled over by the smog police and even though he doesnt have to pass an e-test since his car came with emissions stuff on it he still has to have it on his car. He got hit with over a grand in fines. Gotta love the world we live in.

Yep...that is what I am sorta worried about these days...I have heard of a couple of people I know getting hit by the "smog police" this summer.
yeah, the only reason i remove air pumps is to just free up space under the hood, you'll never notice a power gain from it. The area i live in dosnt require e testing at all, so i lucked out there.
I drove my 84 buick up to cleveland once and i got pulled over. The cop who pulled me over remarked that the exhaust smelled funny, i told him thats because its a carburated v-8. He insisted on looking under the hood and remarked that i didnt have a smog pump. "Yeah i know, vin y olds 307s dont have smog pumps" i said. He actually bought it. I get out of more tickets that way, just make up a technical excuse. "yeah, well i was going 90 because i wanted to redline the engine cause i just replaced the egr and wanted to make sure it dosnt dump at wide open throttle" or something like that...
As a side note, a friend of mine with a 78 cutlass with a non original olds 350 in it passed modern emissions without an air pump. in fact he got better emissions than the geo behind him.

yeah its a bunch of BS if your car runs well and has a clean burn your emissions will be fine. The part that drives me nuts is if i brought in my car with no emissions stuff on it but it was tuned and ran perfect and it came up with a certain test result (that was a pass) and another camaro that was the exact same but had full emissions stuff and ran like crap and got the exact same emissions result as mine somehow his is road worthy and mine is a crime????? wtf if you can pass an emissions test you can pass it why does it matter what you have on your car?!?!?
well....i guess the easiest answer is that they just pass laws like that to make it look like something is being done about emissions. Basically the same as assault rifle "laws", which if you look at them, actually do nothing at all but kind of look like they do something to the average joe.
The real funny thing is assault rifle laws are much easier to work around than emmission laws are, go figure.
The real funny thing is that usually theres three gasses they check for in your e test: nox, hc, and co. Well the county my friend got his tested in only tests for hc and co. So for all we know his 350 can be billowing out nox but acceptable hc and co levels. You'd think they'd make some sort of national standard for this or something? Oh well....kind of does work to your advantage if you want to "tune" your car just to pass the e check.
So i dunno, i'm not much for emmision, green peace, save the planet stuff anyway. For one, i dont believe the planet is in any real trouble from our cars, lawnmowers and weedeaters. But even if it is.....so what? I'm only hanging around this place another 70 years or so.

I only got tested for co's and hc's. Its all a bunch of bs i do agree with keeping broken down cars that are billowing out black smoke off the road but they should somehow diferentiate between that and performance vehicles.

My air pump kinda broke and was shaking, due to which my serpentine belt shook a lot. All I did was get a emission approval certificate from any muffler store. Most of them do it for like $20. After U get that, u can go ahead and remove your smog pump and reroute the belt. An article in the tech section helped me out. That certificate lasts for 6 to 12 months depending on the state. I had no problems with the smog police because I showed them my emissions certificate.
