Fuel Gauge not reading correctly
Fuel Gauge not reading correctly
I have a 91 Firebird, 305 V8, TBI.
I read through other post trying to find a solution to my problem, but everyone else was complaining of a stuck gauge or a gauge that wiggled around, or other weird situations. Mine is a little different.
When the car is full on gas, the gauge reads about a 1/4 of a tank ABOVE the FULL mark. And when it is empty it is at about 1/4 tank. It moves consistantly between the two points, just seems to be off by about a 1/4 of a tank. Can I just fill the car up, pull the needle off and put it where it should be?
Thanks in advance, Rob

if you CAN pull the needle off and reposition it then do it.
if not it sounds like the resistance of the circuit is messed up and you would have to figure out where the extra resistance is coming from.

Does anyone know if pulling the needle off and putting in on at the correct position is even an option. I don't want to have to pull the dash apart just to find out that it wouldn't work.
Also, how would I go about finding a problem with the resistance? Are there default values that I should compare to?
Thanks,
Rob

get used to it... it's how most GM cars are.
The tank is shaped so oddly etc etc etc
Anyway, are you sure its EMPTY at 1/4?
our tanks have a 15.5 gallon capacity
i never use more than 13 and its on E by the time that happens

Actually it is EMPTY at a bit more than 1/4...closer to the 1/2 mark. And yes I am sure that it is EMPTY. It has sputtered and died on me about 4 times in the last year and a half.
Leading to a long walk or a call for help. heh.
Mine never gets to the E, or even to the red, like I said, My full tank has the needle well above the "F" and my EMPTY seems to be between the 1/4 and 1/2 tank. And in those situations I am able to put over 15 gallons back into it.
Like I started this post with. The needle seems to move correctly throughout the tank of gas, it is just starting and ending at points shifted to the right of were it should.
So if anyone "HAS AN ANSWER" about the needle question, please let me know:
Can I just pull the needle off when I have either a completely full or empty tank and put it into the right position?

Kinda sounds like my situation... my guage reads 1/4 tank high when I fil it up... but it stays there untill about 1/8 tank or so, when it drops from F+1/4 tank to E.
I'm just gonna try putting in a new sending unit in the tank... PM me later (couple weeks prolly) and if I have it done, I'll ley you know how it went.

My guage will read over full also. But it stops at 1/2 tank and wont move after that. I think I damaged the sender whenever I changed the fuel pump a couple years ago. Oh well...sender is 350$...maybe someday.
