Zexel Torsion take off units from SLP for $99

Does anyone know how well the units work? Why are they so cheap compared to an Aurborn Posi unit?Does anyone know what the difference between the two of them is. The reason i ask is because im getting 3.73 gears and dont want to have a one legger anymore.

They are not cheap if you by them brand new. THe take off units are taken out of 4th gen f-bodys that usually have low miles or no miles on them at all that SLP has hopped up and put different posi units in to handle lots of HP. THe Zexel Units don't have clutches and are suppose to be as strong as the cheaper model of the Auburn units and not wear out as quick as the posi units with clutches. My dad bought one a few months ago to put in his S-10 but didn't realize he would need 28 spline axles and his S-10 has 26...which is my S-10 now. I need to buy the 28 spline axles before I put it in. It looks like brand new and no noticeable wear is on it or the gears inside it. THey do not come with a warranty but for $99 I think it's a great deal for a low budget rear-end upgrade.

By the way all 90+ f-body cars have 28 spline axles so you are good to go in that aera. WHat gears do you have now? if they are 3.08 or lower make sure you get the 3.73 gears that will fit in the 3.08 or lower carriers.

The SLP take-off posi is for 3 series carriers, so you need 3-series gears.

SLP's website is http://www.slponline.com/ Look for the monthly specials.

i've bought two of them. one is in my truck and one i put in my buddies. they work great although i'd like a little higher breakaway load. it is really a locker with a lower breakaway load. had no problems with mine or my buddies. no additive needed either. i even have a good couple of pictures of mine in use, just have no clue how to post them. just go to slpeng.com and get the phone no. call them to order.

Godti,

You will need new axles unless you are one of the lucky ones that got the 28 spline axles for your car. They were rare in the 89 f-body cars and the only way you will find that out is look on the end of the axle which I don't think you can do without pulling the axle out. You can get new Moser axles for around $289 if I remember right and the Zexel torsion unit for $99 and you will be just as cheap if you bought a new Auburn unit yet have stronger axles!

3-series means the gear number starts with 3, as in 3.23 and 3.42 and 3.73. Except for 3.08, that is a 2-series, as in 2.73 and 2.56.

The SLP take-off posi is in their monthly specials section, like I said above.

So if I am one of the unlucky ones, how many splines do I have?? Is there a gear set that I can get without getting new axles?? Or is that my only choice, new gears= new axles??

The SLP posi is only for 28 spline axles. 26 splines is what came before, and Auburn makes a posi unit for those. I've seen in in Jegs for $300.

I changed my 3.08 open to a 3.42 in my 91 RS. I got a very nice used GM ring and pinion from a friend and the Torsen from SLP.
This difference on my car was incredible. I don't have a lot of power but no problems installing or using the Torsen. It works great! I had 28 spline axels though.....bob

Just for your info I just pulled a shaft from my 89 parts car rear to replace a bent axle on my daughters 90 Trans Am and it was smaller in diameter and had less splines. By the way I also check online yesterday afternoon and found Moser stock style but stronger shafts for less than $150. with 2 day delivery. I'm also considering one of SLP'S $299 Torsen units for my soon to be Vortec 350 91. I traded some cop 350 heads for a new set of GM 3:42's. Good luck!

Unless there are two different Zexel-Torsen diffs available from SLP, they are only $99. At least right now they are. I ordered one last week and got it on Friday. The part number is 64501T, total including shipping was about $112.

There are indeed TWO different Torsen diffs.

First one that everybody has been mentioning for $99 is the oem take off that SLP pulled from the cars to install the Auburn Pro diff that was an option for SS & Firehawk orders. The oem diff is a bit stronger than the oem Auburn diff and is good for many folks. The $299 HD Torsen that SLP sells (399-429 in other company adds in magazines) is very definately different than the $99 oem grade take-offs. I have one of each, the HD for my 92Z, and the $99 take-off for my wife's 96 T/A w/RamAir. The HD case is much heavier & beefier. The "paddle" which separates the axles after the C-clips are installed is a solid rectangular piece of metal (instead of the round pins in Auburns). The take-off paddles have been machined to reduce weight and definately aren't designed as heavy duty as the HD unit is. If someone is really interested in a side-by-side photo, I'll post one.
