Loud hollow clunking sound from rear...

Ok, I have an 1989 IROC Caramo with a 350, I have only had it for about a week and now there is a loud hollow clunking sound comming from the rear. It only happens during acceleration and while cruising. If I shift into neutral it goes away. I am thinking U joints or the rear end gears. I jacked up the car and there seems to be a some play when I turn one wheel before the driveshaft moves. Ideas? How much do new gears cost? Thanx guys...

Sounds like a broken tranny mount. Look at getting a urethane part.

No, it is the rear end. As I was driving home, (it was a constant clunk that got faster and faster as I went faster) I came to a stop and went to take off and BAM! Couldn't move. My teeth have sheered off or something. I heard that ford rear ends are a lot stronger than stock so maybe I can get one of those? Ideas? Can I replace just the gears inside? Prices? Thanx.

Sounds like a tooth sheared off the ring gear... bummer

You'd probably do better to just get another rear end than to try to fix that one. Gears for those (9-bolts) are HIGH, and you'll have to buy the bearing kit, lube, labor, etc. It would probably run up a $1k bill. You should be able to get one at the boneyard for about half that.

My friend had a 78 that was doing the samething we were drive slow trying to figure out were it was coming from then blam screech no more movement. It turn out that the spider gear had blown apart and lock up the whole thing. We change out the spider gear refilled with oil and all was normal.

It is a 9 bolt. It doesn't have spider gears. There is a pinion gean, and a larger ring gear. Half the teeth are broken off of the pinion and all the teeth on the ring gear are bent, twisted. I called Summit, and they said they have a set of 3.7? gears that should fit for around $200. Thats what I am planning on doing, since I had 3.2? gears already.
