question for the engine guru's

Tonight I pulled the pan off my motor.

It looks like the it spun a main bearing. The bearing was really chewed up.Also the two rods next to that bearing where bone dry.I am not sure if it was from the heat or what. The motor did this today I would say around 4:30.I pulled the pan off at 10:30 and the main bearing that spun was still warm to the touch.

First of all what causes this to happen. The bearing was probably an an 1/8 inch from where is should have been.

The motor was not brand new.I did plasti gage the bearings and they where fine. Also there was no metal shavings in the oil pump pickup.Just one long sliver.

Now my question is what to do.The bores are still perfect.I am think i should hone it and rering.Along with get a new steel crank and main bearings.Along with ARP rod and main bolts.A new 7 qaurt oil pan with the right pickup tube.Did this happen because of the highvolume pump?

Thanks for any help.If it wasn't for this board I would have no clue

Sounds like an oil delivery problem if the bearings were installed correctly.

if you spun a main your block would be trashed. if the bearing is just worn your block would still be good. plasti gauge is next to worthless. if you do engines you should have some precession measuering tools, like mics and dial bore gauge. i agree you have an oil supply problem. you running HV pump with stock pan and high RPMs? if so you may have pumped the pan dry. ok i just scrolled down you do have a HV pump so yes that'd be my guess. you don't need a HV pump for any street applications, or even most track applications.

Why do you say the block is trashed if the main bearing spun?

I am not questioning you.I just don't understand.

I plan on rebuilding the motor completly.new crank, rods, pistons. The reason I ask is.The block is a 4 bolt main.standard bore 350.And I would really like to keep it.

not to hijack the thread but how hard was it to get the oil pan off and what did you do? I am looking at having to take the pan off my friends 350 cause three lifters went cannonballing down there when we removed his cam

Ede is saying the block is trashed because the main bore the bearing resided in is now probably proportionally out of round
the only way to check is with a dail bore gauge. Sorry, your not the first and probably not the last to lose a good block because of this.

Well that really sucks.I suppose the machine shop will have a dial bore gauge I am going to talk to them tommorow.I also have to get my cavalier to a trans shop while I get this motor rebuilt.

It is going to suck going from a low 14 second truck to a 18 secong cavalier.

Pull off the distributor cap, take the bolts out of the engine mounts, and hoist the engine a few inches. It will slide out the back after you take the bolts off the pan.
