Tall vs. Short Valve Covers
I am replacing my leaking valve cover gaskets on my 1984 z28 5.0 HO engine. Frankly, the covers look pretty bad. I decided that I want to buy a nice looking set of chrome or alum. valve coves. I look on e-bay and I see advertisements for tall and short covers. What is the difference between them? what should I buy?

are you thinking of any mods to your car? i.e. roller rockers like 1.6's or a cam with more lift? generally that is why tall covers are nice. it gives you more clearance from the valve train so it doesnt hit the cover.

No, if and when I put a 350 in it I may modify the valve train, but not on the 305.
I know that my older engine has the bolt holes outside instead of inside.
I saw an advertisement stating that the holes were opposite instead of staggard.
Does the 1984 305 have holes opposite, or staggard, or do I have to go look first?

I like the tall aluminum valve covers. No oil leaks no rocker arm noise and they look sharp especially with the GM corprate 305 stickers on top.
The only difference in bolts will be the center bolt or parimiter bolt. You have the 4 parimeter. SOme aluminum cover have to be drilled for PCV and oil filler cap so look for ones pre-drilled preferably with baffles.

Thanks for your reply. It is an oil leak that initiated this little project, so I certainly don't want any leaks after I am done. I also don't want to be fabricating pvc or oil cap holes.

i highly doubt that your oil leak is a result of having short valve covers. getting tall ones wont eliminate that, although new gaskets most likely will.
