Stealth Ram Hood

Ehm, I saw no other board where I could submit this thread, so admins please feel free to move this where ever it belongs to..

I was thinking about buying the HSR, when I read the FAQ it doesnt really fit under the stock hood. So what hood do I need to make it all fit? (Maybe this even belongs into the HSR FAQ??)

Then there's this Accel Super Ram which seems to be able to take an EGR coz it has ports for it.. Is that true? And why is everyone talking bad about Accel?

The SuperRam is a good intake but it takes alot more time to assemble and cost 3 times more money(base, runners, plenum) than a StealthRam(intake, fuel rails). It all depends what RPM you want to make your power at.

hmmm.. i heard the HSR has power losses in the middle RPM range, and unleashes its force at lets say around 6k. My car will never go that far. So I'd need the power where the HSR doesnt give it, in the middle of it all. My current shifting point, when flooring, is 5k, and I wouldnt want to expand that.

I see that not many ppl can tell me their experiences since the SuperRam is that expensive :\
But I don't want a new hood, the HSR doesn't fit under mine...

I appreciate any input, thanks from a 'engine newbie'..

I have had all three intakes, TPI, Super Ram & currently the HSR. The TPI makes great torque but limits upper rpm HP. The SR makes good power to 5800, but is expensive & a PITA to assemble. The HSR is the best in my opinion, but has no provision for EGR. The limiting factor on stock L98's is the intake, change that to a shorter runner & it will wake it up the upper rpm's. Yes hood clearance is an issue, worse with poly motor mounts. A 2" or higher cowl hood will clear. An RS hood with stock mounts should clear with no problems, anything else is a maybe.

I wish to reinstall the stock non-cowl 1982 Z-28 hood on my 82 Z-28 but I am concerned that I will have underhood clearance problems. I understand that the 82-84 plastic hoods are thicker in the center of the hood in the exact area where you need the clearance. I have a co-worker who removed his stock plastic 1983 Z-28 hood after he installed a TPI engine and when they went to close the hood it hit the TPI plenum.

I want to have a good EFI system that will not cause this interference. Also I have poly mounts. What system would best suit this purpose? I do like the programability of the Accel systems.

Ricktpi you seem to have quite a bit of experience in this area. Do you have a suggestion?

Thanx, andyZ28

I have seen the C4 Corvette guys use a shorter plenum with the StealthRam setup for hood clearance. Somebody sells one...I couldn't find a quick link...check on the Corvette forums. If it fits a Corvette it'll fit a Camaro or Firebird fine.

It wouldn't hard to fab a sheetmetal box to make a new plenum either if you're handy with a TIG welder. Power coat it and it'll work and look great.

The GM 82-84 plastic hoods are much diffierent. They are thicker in the are I have typically seen cut away.
