Fixing the rocker style dimmr switch

Is there any way to fix it? I know I can get one for like $20 or less, but I would rather fix mine for free. I've had it apart but cant figure out what the problem is. I havent had dash lights in for about 2 years, so its really no big deal.

Hulk,

Depending on your year and model, the thumbwheel control on the dash may not directly control the dash lights. Some models have a dimmer control module wired after the switch. This is located near the "convenience center" that swings down from under the dash near the center console extension, behind the radio.

Swing the "convenience center" down out of the way and look back toward the radio. The dimmer module is attached to the dash.
The module has the top of a TO-3 transistor sticking out the side, and should have a dark green wire among others. Check the voltage on this dark green wire while adjustng the dimmer control wheel. If the voltage varies on this wire the thumbwheel is O.K., and the dimmer module is probably toast.
