Axle/Gears: 9-bolt rear. gears? hell if i know
starter install.
im getting really frustrated, i can't seem to get the starter in. i get it in the pocket, but can't rotate it to fit in properly. what do i do?

Cheaper starters usually don't work for both applications, only the more expensive one's can be adapted for either/or.
Unless I'm mis-understanding you're explanation?

When you say you can't rotate it to fit properly.... are you sure you got the right size 'tooth ring gear' for the flywheel to engage (they come in two different sizes.... one's 153, and the other is 168)?

If it's the same pattern as the original unit.... then the oil pan is not a concern. You just need some room to work with. Remember, it's always easier to remove something, than it is to install it (not including rusted bolts of course lol).

It'll go in, just don't force it, and don't get frustrated. Give yourself more room to work with, and remove the Y-Pipe from the exhaust manifolds....

Assuming you got the correct starter, jack your car up and take off the wheel, that will give you room to see what your doing. The oil pan won't be in theway if you have the right starter. you gotta worm it up through the exhaust and eventualy you''ll get it to go in place. Thenits just a few wires and two bolts are your done!!!
its a tedious job but it will go in! i had to pull tranny lines slighly out of the way to get the starter in there. be carfull not to pull them too much or it will break.

happen to you that happend to me. i got the starter installed and it was no good. so i took it off and returned it. they checked the one i brought back and sure as **** it was bad. then once i got the other new starter installed, it needed shimmed! took 3 or 4 times to get it right.

My dad never had a problem with myn, maybe its cause he's done *** knows how many starters, but we had it off in 15 minutes, all we did was jack it up, put a towel for him to work on, and pulled it off.

When I did mine, I finally got the bad one out with a fair amount wiggling and twisting. However, I could not seem to duplicate the same combination of wiggling and twisting to get the new one back into the correct position. Of course, holding a 20 lb starter over your head gets old real quick! I ended up removing the selenoid from the starter to make more room, then reinstalling it after it was in close proximity to its necessary position, just prior to bolting everything back up. Yes, it is a real pain, but be patient with it and it will go back in!
