GM Crate 350 ,HP?
GM Crate 350 ,HP?
I have been talking to other thirdgenner's
about the crate 350 from GM, the version that sells for $1289. It's rated @ 249HP and 304 ft/lbs torque. Does anyone know if it was tested with or w/o headers? How about a four barrel or TPI? Any answers would be greatly appreciated!
How about that myth that we can drop that motor in without changing our little 305 computer?

I've got the Goodwrench 350 in my 85. It was a huge inprovement over the LG4. I didn't replace anything during the swap. You may have to change some stuff on a TPI though. As for the horsepower, I read somewhere that the 250 HP rating was with headers and aluminum intake, not sure which carb was used either. This is a great engine to start out with. It makes good power and gets good mileage, about 25 highway. If you want to make some more power it is a good foundation. You could go with a ZZ4 or other high performance crate engines. I bought the cheaper crate engine so I can mod it how I like. So if you want just a daily driver it would be an economical choice. If you're going to race maybe go with a ZZ4 or something. It's all up to you. Good luck either way you go.
thats a good engine, as you may have read, lots of car mag's use it as a base engine for their build ups. also... i read in CHP a few months ago that they dyno'd the engine w/headers and an intake, and it made about 230hp, slightly under what was claimed, go figure
