heads on the 350 L98

hey fellas, im rebuilding my 350 L98. im wanting to make anywhere from 290-320rwhp, im wondering what heads/intake i should use. ive heard stock cast iron heads, mildy port/polished will do me just fine for that.. is that true? what should i get? im looking to spend maybe $250 on used heads that i could clean up.. anyone got any suiggestion on what kind of heads i should look for or should i stick with stock cast iron????

If you're on a tight budget, then you should stick with the stocker's.

If compression really isn't an issue (that is, if you don't plan on putting a blower on the engine.... and you don't mind paying for a little higher in octane fuel at the gas station).... have the heads cut a tenth of an inch.

With a power drill (and a porting kit), port match you're intake and exhaust runners to the intake and exhaust manifold(s).....

The proper valve-train is key, and RWHP of up to and over 350 HP shouldn't be too surprising....

vortecs, or if you're richer, AFR, or if you're even richer, fast burns, and if you're even richer than that, Dart PRO1 or Brodix Track 1s, and if you're super rich, SB2.2 or 32V ported SBC heads

Then you should rebuild the ones you have.

Also.... Seriously consider going with a 'roller' type valvetrain. This alone will free up some extra ponies. I know you're on a budget, but it'll be worth it, believe me.

AFR's are more expensive than fast burns, and much better.

infact, AFR's are probably the best street heads you can buy.

True but he is on a tight budget. If you can swing getting a new manifold, I'd say look into getting some vortec heads from the junkyard. I konw of a few poeple who are running the ported cast iron vortecs with a few mods and getting pretty good numbers. If I remember correctly, ChrisFormula355 was running them and his car was in the 12 second range. He could probably give you more info on them if you IM him.

Hope that helps.

If you have the stock heads from a 350 L-98 you have one of the better stock heads to start with. Use them.
Port and polish them and install larger 2.02x 1.60 valves.

No need to buy other heads.

Casting number ends in "083"
