What are my options for a THIN head gasket?

My compression with the heads and pistons I have is a bit too low for me. I think I can get a few tenths of a point above what I have by going thinner than a standard .038 gasket. What is available, whats the part number, how thick is it, and how much $$$ are they?

i wouldn't use a steel shim type gasket ,.019 i believe, due to the difficulity of getting the to seal, especially if any machine work has been done to the deck or head.

Jester,

I think I’m obligated to try and convince you to NOT use a shim gasket. The only way to make them seal for any length of time in a street engine, and I do mean, “only way”, is if your block deck is perfectly flat and true. The heads also require the same detail. GM used them in past times out of the factory; but then again, everything was “new and true”.

You would be leaps and bounds ahead if you get the block decked to zero or -.005” (piston down the hole). Then you could use the .040” Fel Pro’s that have NEVER failed on me (and I’ve been doing this crap for many, many moons). At zero, your piston will be up .025” more than stock, and that’s the difference between the shim and a “real” gasket.
