Towing a popup camper with a 3rd gen?

I have an 88 GTA with the 350 TPI motor. I've been wanting to get a small camper of some sort to take with me to all the mountain bike races I go to. Sleeping in a tent is starting to suck. Anyways, I was looking at a pop up or a small camper like a 12 foot trailer. Would towing something like this be too much for my car to handle? My only other car is my wife's 86 Deville which is WAY underpowered. My car has a tranny cooler on it. Anyways, what do you guys think? Matt

I towed my pop up camper with a stock 95 neon before. I don't think you'll have any problem with your GTA. You can pull them around the lawn with just your arms if you want.

I've pulled an 18' ski boat all over the state with my 82 Z-28 with a wimpy "CrossFire" engine. Didn't have any problems at all.

Need a hitch? Mine's for sale!

at least get one with the assembly that can be removed. Maybe it won't look as bad.

hey guys unless you are gonna buy him a truck leave him alone. i know how it is to have to work with what you have. if that is all he has then that is what he has. i cant really give info on towing with a camaro but i would venture to say that to much weight might cause some clearance problems.

Well from two view points. Yes it looks like crap but if you have to then you have to. The newer small pop up's only require a vehical with 90hp. I think my gokart could pull one with a slight push to get it going. Do get a removable hitch and if you dont have SFC's you will need them. Unibodys dont make good tow trucks!

HEY!,,The hitch is part of my "sleeper package"

If you're really concerned abt it, the hitch comes off in abt 5 min.

Just fab up some wheelie bars to slide into the hitch receiver when your not towing.

If its that easy to remove go for it. That wouldnt be that bad. The GTA makes 350lbs of torque...that should get a small pop up trailor moving in a hurry.

yeah i suppose you can...but as ghallager said:

"It's like riding in the back of a pickup truck; there's no way to do it and look cool"

But...i see alot of people tow things with cars that werent really meant for it. Here's the latest and funniest gone wrong story i saw about it...

Just balance/pack the trailer so the tongue weight is about 80#, and you should be O.K. A full tank of fuel versus an empty one is about a 95# difference. Given the rated GVWR of a typical F car, you should be safe with a well balanced trailer.

Yes, I'd vote for a removable one as well.
