Am I nuts for using a gasket on the water neck? Should I use RTV?

Well, last Saturday, I replaced my 160 thermo for my 195, because I can't take the cold! Anyway, I spent most of the time scraping the old gasket crap off the manifold & thermo housing.

I'm tempted to use blue RTV. The gasket always gets crudded onto the housing, and then I gouge the aluminum parts by trying to scrap the gasket off. I always have to put on a ton of sealer so I don't get leaks.

Am I nuts for using a gasket all the time? What do you guys use? If you use RTV, does it come off cleanly from the mating surfaces?

I think you should go get yourself a 5 dollar plastic Fel-Pro gasket. It's blue and has a rubber o-ring incorporated in it. It never leaks and lasts a long time. I've reused mine at lest 6-7 times now

You're never crazy for doing things the RIGHT way! i think i'm gonna go get one of those $5 felpro doohickies...sounds like a great deal. i've just used rtv before on race cars and it worked fine, for about 3 races. Then we'd yank the engine and do it again. i didn't like that though, i prefer using the gaskets

I use Permatex Gasket remover. I've never had a gasket come off easy with that stuff. I should throw the damn thing out, but I always use it, in hopes it'll work one day. Maybe I got a bad can, eh? I actually used some brake cleaner this last time, and it seemed to help! Go figure.

I'll have to check out some later model 2.8's in the junkyard... when did the v8's get that o-ringed water neck?

tom,

i rarely have luck with that gasket remover stuff and when i do, it's very intermittent. i think it makes a better paint remover, personally. i always use a gasket for the thermostat too, and have to scrape the bitch off but i figure an extra 15 minutes of my time now will be well worth it vs. cruising down the highway with a pi$$ing thermostat. the o-ring water necks are aftermarket...good old mr gasket to the rescue again

I have a waterneck with a rubber O-Ring in it, but it just recently started to leak and the autoparts store I bought the waterneck from doesn't have the 0-Ring. I am just going to get the Fel-Pro rubber gasket, even though it costs almost $6 bucks. I am about to change my thermo back to 195 cuz it's too cold outside and the car never gets warm.
Probably do it tomorrow.
