Problem with starter gear.

Okay so I am doing the auto to t5 swap. I pulled off the flex plate and when I went to put the fly wheel on I noticed the gear for the starter was all pushed back inside the starter housing, now it doesnt make contact with the flywheel. I tried pulling the gear foward with a screw driver but the second I let go of it the gear springs back into the housing. Is there a way to fix this? Is this normal?

yes it is normal. when starter motor is engaged, (turning the key) the centripital (sp) force compresses the spring and the gear comes out to touch the flywheel.
