305 bored to a 350
My friend has been looking at this car over by where we live. Its a 90 camaro RS with throttle body injection. The owner claims that it has a 350 in it.It has the normal eratic idle problem that comes with the 350 swap and still having the 305 computer stuff.I drove it and it ran well, seeing as how I have been down this road with my car and i did the whole swap .It seems to run the same as mine did in this stage. But heres the thing. I pulled the casting numbers off of the block, and its a 305. I havent been able to get a hold of the owner of the car so I was wondering if a 305 can somehow be bored and stroked to a 350 . It sounds logical, but I have heard it cant be done. My friend really wants this car ,but doesnt want it unless its a 350, or unless the guy drops the price big time. Anyway I appreciate any help I can get on this subject. Thanks

Nope! No can do! The 350 and 305 have the same stroke. The cylinder walls on a 305 aren't anywhere near thick enough to bore out over 1/4 inch. What is the casting number?

I dont have the full casting number, I have the last three digits that is printed on the bottom of the drivers side of the block. the number is 627. I looked it up at mortec.com. I didnt think you could do it becuase of the bore, but I have heard people say its possible , and I couldnt remember if it was the bore or the stroke that was the same as the 350.Now I have to talk to the guy and find out where the hell he came up with it being a 350 and why it has the eratic idle problem. I have to say it definetly has more power than your usuall L03 .Thanks guys.

I have two of the 14093627 305 blocks in my garage right now. What I think probably happened was that the owner got the engine rebuilt, or the owner before him. At my machine shop they put flattop pistons and a fairly nice cam in every rebuild, similar to an L69 cam and the L98 cam which are the same except one is a roller. It runs strong so they can say it's a 350 but it's probably just a warmed over 305. Trust the casting numbers, the one on the back of the block next to the drivers side head should read 14093627 and say GM 5.0LG. The maximum safe overbore for a "627" 305 block is about .040. I have seen some blocks go .060 over but that's the limit.
305
3.75 bore-3.48 stroke=305
3.81(.060)bore-3.75(400 crank)= like 336,not even close to a 350

I couldnt see the full casting number because its in a pretty difficult position to see with the engine still in the car.I finally talked to the guy ,and all he could tell me is that he remebers his son saying it has an aliminum corvette crankshaft. He said it was his sons, and now he is in the military, and wants it sold. Thanks for the help.

"Aluminum Corvette heads" I'd believe. No such thing as an aluminium crankshaft.
It's time to low-ball on price. You can make a 305 run pretty decent, but it won't be a 350 until it has a 4" bore block in it.

Dude your getting took there's NO such thing as an aluminum crank. Carry a small(about the size of an tooth brush) wire brush and some carb spray and get the numbers! Check out http://www.mortec.com for info on the #'s and where to look!

Yeah we went ahead and low balled with the guy, but hes determined to sell this to some young kid who doesnt know what hes talking about. He stands firm on it being a 350 and he wont drop the price I left him an offer and told him to call me if he reconsiders.I have a 350 block in my garage so if my friend gets it for a lower price , I will give it to him and he will get it machined and rebuilt and we will throw it in.Thanks .

that sucks man, when I was looking for a 350 camaro, just about every camaro I looked at "has a 350", untill I had one of my friends check it out (the numbers I guess). most of them turned out to be 305's

The guy called me back and took my offer today , so now my friend has the car,now the hunt for a bigger engine begins , hes in college so he doesnt have massive funds. So we were thinking of getting a short block and putting the 305 stuff on it.305 heads with fit on a 350 right? We went and looked at a 400 sbc and he really wants to buy it, but I know it wont be easy to use with the tbi, Also would the 305 heads fit a 400. I am not sure exactly what hes going to do but I will probably post something in the engine swap forum about it later. Thanks
