i did it on my 85 trans am , it was the worst job ever. It was such a pin in the ***, if i had to do it again i would have paid someone 400 or 500 to do it or bypassed it to have no heat, i only drive it in the summer so i dont need heat , but it is a pain in the *** to do . good luck

changing the core isnt that bad if you do it w/o taking the dash apart. The top most bolt is a pain, though. It took me around 20 mins or so to get it out, and needless to say, i didnt put it back in. Overall it took me around 45 minutes to change it out.

I did my heater core on my 88Iroc. All I did was follow the directions in my Haynes manual. It is very involved but not really that bad. My hardest part was removing and replacing the hoses in the engine compartment that connect to the heater core. No room whatsoever. Be prepared to remove everything: console, radio, heater controls, dropping the steering column. It was sort of neat how the dash just sort of pivoted out to get to the core. Oh, one more thing. When you put it back together, don't let that stray light for the AC controls get stuck in the back. I wondered why I didn't have illumination anymore until read a post here that said the light can get lost in the innards of the dash.

One more thing, if you find it hard getting it in, look at the top left corner by the HVAC controls, theres a lil metal bar that i couldn't find out what was keeping mine from going it, it ended up being that damn bar, don't bend it though.
good luck

I did mine about a year and a half ago. On my 91 Z28. There was an aweful lot of swearing involved trying to get the whole dash thing apart and out of the car. Not sure if I needed to totally remove it out of the car but I did anyway. The steering wheel kept getting in the way, even when lowered. Also I had trouble getting the heater hoses off the heater core end from the engine compartment. I still had the original old-school clamps that you have to sqeeze and slide. They were pretty much part of the hose and wouldn't budge. I ended up cutting one of the hoses.
I'd remove the front seats (4 bolts each) to give you more leg room to lay down. I removed all my seats and carpet as well because I replaced my carpet at the same time.
PepBoys quoted me about 650 for the job. Screw that. Well I learned a lot and could probably do it much faster next time. Which I pray will never come to be.
Good luck though!!!

I just finished my hc install last weekend. I got to the top bolt the easiest by taking off the dashpad and taking out the pass speaker. I also took off the piece of dash plastic just below the map pocket (on a bird) the part that has the performance suspension badge. I moved the "electronic module" that is bolted under that dash plastic (more like center left) and dropped out the ecm . With a 1 foot extension I was able to go straight in to get to the bolt. I put my hand thru the speaker opening to help guide the socket on the bolt.
I'm not sure how much different it would be with a camaro, if things line up the same way and if access will be the same.
good luck.

As you can read, the heater core is a real pain to change. If you concider that the core is pretty cheap, the cost of paying for installation is like 99% of the cost. If you are handy, it should take a day. Like I said, get a decent manual and have fun. yea, right!!

That brings back bad memories. i had to do that last year on my 86 ROC. Took me 2 hours of swearing to complete. Yes it is a PITA!!!
The hardest part is that top bolt. I used a snake driver and was able to get it off. All I did was remove dash pad, speaker, Bottom Pass panel, and ECM. Wouldnt want to do it again thats for sure.

Yea, 1986tpiiroc, I felt the same way when I completed the job. But if it did happen again, there is no way I would pay someone $500 to replace a $30 part. I was just amazed that after I took the whole dam dash apart, that I was able to get it back together again. Other then those dam hoses, it was by the book.

I started ripping and tearing........I got it all apart and got the old core out....and the new one went in way too easy
I got all the screws back in and the complete dash, wheel, console, dash pad back together and I came in for a break! It took me about
2-3 hours and when I go back out I'll do the big test.......
start her up and check for leaks
I'll let ya know how it turns out, thanks for the input and ideas
I wouldnt have even tryed it untill I see so many other people have done it,I meen Ive done motors trans.etc. so hell I'll try the core project that everyone hated

Dont get me wrong, I would do it again if I had to, its just I wouldnt want to.
Id rather keep the $500 dollars my self and just install the $19.00 Part.

i just changed mine!
I just changed the core out in my '90 IROC. Before i did i checked here for any tips and hints. Lemme tell ya, save yourself some time, remove the dash pad for top screw removal and drop the ecm and the ecm bracket for the top side screw removal. it took me 4 hours to change mine and i spent over a hour and a half just tryin to get these 2 screws out! if i had taken the dang dash pad and ecm bracket out intially it woulda saved me over an hour! even worse! if i woulda checked my damn heater hoses i wouldnt have had to change nuffin! thats right! after all was said and done the core wasnt leaking at all. i got all the way down to removing the hose and pulling the core out. when i went to loosen a heater hose i noticed that it was really loose. so loose that the dang water was running out from around this hose and into the car! well since i had already gone that far i changed it out anyway and also the hoses. so, if anyone needs a good, stock, like new heater core lemme know!

I got to run mine and its great! I began to wonder the same thing about the hose deal.......The guy I got the car from said the core was bad and had it bypasse,d so I assumed he knew something, but when the old one came out there was no sign of it ever leaking anywhere.....maby it is bad... but either way its new now!
