Smog pump delete pulley installed, pics within...

My smog pump delete pulley arrived on Friday and installed in on Saturday. It went in like a champ, looks nice too. It cost me $42 shipped to my door. P/N 10186167 Anyways, I took a few pics of it.

The pulley:

Mainly because I wanted to be able to use the stock belt size and routing. Plus it looks neater and more OEM, IMHO. It was also cheap enough that I didn't need to worry about the cost. The part number I included in my original post is a GM part number, available from any GM parts counter.

Yes thats a GM part number.

How come in the first pic you have your belt routed under the crank, and in the second pic, its over the water pump?

In the first pic, the belt is routed according to the tech article here on thirdgen.org on how to route it with the smog pump removed. As wacky as it may have looked, everything did turn in the correct direction. The second pic is the correct way it is supposed to be routed (as per the factory belt routing decal), now that pulley is in place of the smog pump.

Some might say it does but I doubt it causes enough parasitic drag to make much of a difference. Most people probably do it to clear up alot of clutter under the hood. Removing it (and all of the AIR tubes) out of there really does free up some room, looks cleaner, makes it a little easier to work on things with it out of the way. I had non-AIR headers installed so thats mainly why I had it removed. Eventually I'll probably put it back in when I get to do the engine swap that I want to.

Looks good, where did you order it from, just your local Chevy dealer?

Also, when you tear all of your smog crap out, can I take all the tubes out and just plug them with bolts? Do I take the tube out that goes to the cat, too?

Thanks man!!!

Cntrvrsy - Off the top of my head I can't remember what belt size it was. The tech article here does list what size to use, and that is what size it was.

JeffP - I ordered it from Dal, but you should be able to get it from any dealer. I checked with Scoggin-Dickey and their price was similar.
If you keep your stock exhaust manifolds and remove all the AIR tubes, you can use pipe plugs to plug the holes. I'm not sure what size they are but they are out there. That's how mine were done, then I had non-AIR headers installed. The tube going to the cat was removed, and the hole in the cat was welded shut.

another reason to remove it is if the dang thing locks up on you and then you go try and buy a new one from GM...not cheap. Mine locked up one day after I shut the car off at work and when I cranked it up it about blew my ear drums from the noise the belt was making as it was turning on the frozen pulley. It is much nicer and easier to get to everything with all the crap removed. I heard some cars above 90-91 having their check engine light come on when the diverter valve was unpluged but i've never had any problems whatsoever. I wish I had known there was a pulley when I did mine though just to make it look neat. Thanks for the part number Dana92RS!

No problem! Just passing along info that others supplied on the thirdgen mailing list. BTW, I don't think this part has been around that long. It seems that interest for the pulley began when that article in one of the hotrod mags came out with that yellow Camaro RS with the RamJet 350 installed. It showed the pulley installed, I'd never seen or heard of it before then. Someone on the mailing list was able to hunt down the part number for it. I had been running problem free without a smog pump (or pulley) for about 2 years, but I agree with you that it looks neater with it installed. Plus it was cheap and retains the stock belt.

Unplugging the Diverter Valve hasn't given me any codes whatsoever.

Thanks for the info Dana. I'll have to pick me up one of those. I been meaning to ditch the smog pump, already got everything else out of there...
