GM Liquid Top Engine Cleaner

Has anyone tried this stuff? I'm thinking of buying a can, but I think I'll wait until its oil change time. Will the spark plugs need changed after using it?

no just use the spray can top engine cleaner get your engine to operating temp remove your PCV start your engine and spray the can into the PCV hose not letting the engine die untill the can is almost empty the stall the engine and let it sit over night. Start the next day(takes a little cranking to do) the watch the black smoke roll out of the tail pipe. I use to work at a CAD dealer and that was the first step used to correct a spark knock. Best stuff on the market and wont hurt the plugs just the carbon in the engine.

Ok, so chances are this will do something good for me and not break my car any worse LOL.

It probably is the same stuff as throttle body cleaner

It won't hurt your car at all and it actually works quite well. I have actually used it to free stuck oil control rings in minor cases. It also works well as stated by Armac to cure carbon related spark knock.

Smells good too well, at least it puts on a good smoke show lol Works wonders on crusty engines.

I have the PN for the liquid stuff, but it looks like the spray can is easier to use. Does anymore have a PN for it? I'd like to save a few minutes at the local autostore

The PN for the liquid is 1050002

I might just get the liquid and use a funnel with a small tube on the end to restrict it a little

I've used plain old Marvel Mystery oil in my 305 Chev engine successfully, to get rid of lifter tick twice. When the oil is a half quart low, I put in a pint or so of MM oil, and drive the car for a few hundred miles, then change the oil. It takes about a hundred miles to work ( dissolving the sludge).

I used the GM top end cleaner once before to try to get rid of engine knock, but it only reduced it a little. My knock went away by itself about a year ago. I didn't do anything, it just decided to go away. My theory is that some coolant is now leaking into that previously knocking cylinder, and is keeping it clean.

I hate to bring this back up.. but i haven't bought the goodies yet

How does this sound: Run some mystery oil for week (about 100 miles), then do the GM cleaner thing, change the oil... and finally the O2 sensor.

I guess the question is if I put a new O2 in first, will i kill it with the cleaners?

Symptoms: general sludge, bad O2, occassional sticky lifter

My oil change is due next month, but my O2 is bad now. I don't want to put a new one in and kill it. If the cleaners affect the sensor, I'll have to change my oil a little sooner, which is no big deal. I don't want to drive around with loosened garbage running in my oil

The top engine cleaner is great! I use it at work and it works wonders. I put it in an aluminum canister one that can be pressurized with compressed air. I mix it 50/50 with gas, hook an air hose to it, regulate the pressure to what you have for normal fuel pressure. I then hook it to the schrader valve, unhook the fuel pump, pinch off both the rubber fuel lines, (press. and return) then run the car until it runs out of the mix. This usually solves a lot of driveability problems. I have actually heard of it unsticking a stuck exhaust valve. Try it out its only like $5 a can.

Yes, I would wait to change the O2 sensor, to keep it clean.

I have used the Liq GM cleaner, and I let it sit overnight. I didn't see a huge difference in my knock, but, it didn't hurt anything either.

My knock went away by itself somehow, later.

I had better results with Techron gas treatment, for removing carbon. It actually cured a knock / miss for me once.

I use the GM Top engine cleaner, I just un plugged the power break booster vacume hose, and crammed it down the bottle! sucked it up pretty good! it choked it down though, and will eventualy bog out (like it's supposed to). just wait 15 minutes or whatever it says, then start it back up and let it idle out all the crap!

it will smell HORRIBLE for about 30 minutes or so. and will smoke like a pile of burning leaves! I guess thats all the carbon burning off.

I got another question for yall, how often do yall do this? I have only done it once (2 months ago or so), just wondering if there is any damage in doing it to often? I mean, the stuff it self doesn't cost hardly much at all

I read about a guy in HRM one time that was a GM serv. manager that uses that stuff on a regular basis. He said that they used it a lot on the new LS1 derived engines. His explanation was that those new breed of engines had such a short piston side skirt that just a little bit of carbon deposit would cause a cold startup knock. He said that the GM top engine cleaner would cure it every time.
