Non-Thirdgen Ride Control Problem (Cadillac)

Im not sure if this is the right board or not but oh well. Anyways, we have a 92 Seville, and the 2 front shocks are gone. Its full of all this electrical crap and they want 2800 or 2400 or something expensive like that to fix them. I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not I could replace these shocks with regular ones, not ones that are like 700 a piece. Their actually struts but im too lazy to go back to and correct it all, anyways, does anyone know if I could do this, just put in some mechanical struts that costs a hell of alot less and arent full of electronic crap???

I have a 88 Seville that I think is the same body style. The front struts don't have anything electrical hooked to them. The rear ones have a leveling system however. I was going to do my front struts in a couple of weeks, they are $40 each from autozone.

Well 92 has alot more stuff than an 88 I guess. All 4 shocks are controlled electronically, and they stiffen as you reach a certain speed for highway driving and other things. You can see the connector right on top going down into the strut, but I dont want to pay all that money for a car thats a 92 I just wanted something reasonable.

There is a way to disable the ride control and put out the warning that it flashes on the control center.

The problem is that the car will ride like a truck after doing this. Stiff as a board.

I can't remember the exact procedure but I'll try to find it. You basically go into the computer and turn off the ride control. You fool it into thinking its fine.

The rest of the good news is that we haven't been able to find a replacement non ride controled strut. They don't make anything that will go in place of these things.

I'll look for that info.

Ah that sucks. I think I know what your talking about, the dealership told us that for 500 bucks we can get this thing that plugs into something, and it skips that code. It already rides like a boat so whats the difference :P It's not worth paying 500 bucks to have the warning not come up, even if I was going to sell it because I just found out the air conditioning decided to break too. Lowsy piece of *** . Ah well guess I gotta drive it to the ground and then get something new. Maybe I'll actually be able to buy a bloody thirdgen!

If I remember right it didn't cost anything to bypass the system.

I'll look into it tomorrow.

I found out that we just called the Caddy dealer and they faxed us a chart showing how to go about disabling the ride control.

Unfortunatly we have since thrown the chart away.

I would call your local dealer and see what they have. The feeling I got was this is common and they are shutting alot of these systems down on the cars because people don't want to pay that much money for struts.

Hope this helps.

Cool man, thanks. The dealership here doesnt want to help anyone out unless it means replacing the struts :P Let me know if you dig anything up.

Got it. 3 pages of the procedure. I think you still need to know how to get into the diagnostic mode through the heater controls (I can never remember) but once in there I have the info to turn off the light and disable the ride control.

Do you have a fax #??

No I dont have a fax number sorry. Could you just email it to me? Maybe I can see if I can get the fax number at my dads work, maybe you can send it there. One thing though, you mention turning off the ride control light... Ours isnt like the display where you could just take out the bulb, its all digital and the message comes up along the bottom of the screen, displays the trouble code, then disappears for a bit...

Off+warmer on the climate control panel puts it into diagnostic mode.

Sorry, we had a power surge and it torched my cable modem service...all better now.

It says for 92 Eldo and Sevilles:

First put it diagnostic mode.

"Observe IPC override "IS08" displayed value.Use the climate control "cooler" button to decrease the value for "IS08" by 8. To store new value, press and hold the "ECON" and "FRONT DEFROST" keys until the new value flashes on and off.

It goes on the say that each harness going to each strut should be cut and taped.

I hope this is what you need. Sorry again for it taking so long.

I can snail mail you the whole thing if you want.

As far as the light, the display message that we had was just like yours, it came on, told us what was wrong and then went away. This procedure should make that go away.
