Too cold!!!!!!!!!!

Any tips on how to get my 88 iroc 305 TPI to warm up faster. Particularly in the engine compartment. It's really getting cold around here. I have a 160 degree thermostat should i switch it out for a new 180 degree?

Perform an archive search.

That's why I generally advise a 180°F thermostat for best all-around driving on a generally unmodified PROM TPI.

a 180 - 195* thermostat

theres no reason for you to even have a 160 in there.

all that the 160 thermo is going to do is not let the engine warm up.... its going to stay at 160 and niether you or the engine will be warm...

The passenger comp gets it's heat from the engine, warm up the engine faster and the inside will warm up faster.

i was told that a 160 would keep the engine cool in the summer. I was having overheating issues when i was sitting in traffic. It helped them but now it's just freakin cold. It's in the 50's during the day and low30's at night should i go 180 or 190 or maybe even 195?

the thermostat sets the MIN tempature... it has nothing to do with the max.

you need to put the proper thermostat back in, no lower then about 180 or so and next summer, fix whatever cooling problem you have. there are thousands of other 3rdgens that arnt overheating with that thermostat.... you have some other problem.

a cooler thermostat is just a bandaid. it wont keep the car cooler, it just gives it a cooler starting point before it overheats...taking longer to overheat.

its still not going to keep you from overheating if you sit there long enough.

Wow. You'd probably lose your breath if you ever get in real cold. 50/30 is normal. -40° is COLD.

I use a 195* t-stat for colder weather. I could live with 50* days fairly easy. Last year I ran a 180* until febuary. One night on a drive across town 0* -25* with wind chill my temp guage dident even move, froze my b utt off. Went 195* a drove comfortable until april. temp guage on cold days hung around 200* with the 195.

that's not terribly cold, but a higher temp thermostat is pretty much the only way to fix that issue. or just not be so impatient. 160 stat will give heat, just not alot at once. i've ran them in michigan in most everything i've owned, but running the fan on any high speed is useless and on true cold days, it'll only take the chill off.

just to contrast....

i run the stock thermostat and ive re routed the heat to all pour out by my feet... so even when its in the 40s, i can still have the top down on the vert and cruise at hwy speeds. the hot air gets sucked right up over me....

remote start on a manual.....scary... dont leave it in gear when you park!

and the flat head screwdriver trick only works on non vats cars....... and even then its not the best way to steal a older GM car.... cracking the other side of the column is.
